Role Summary:
This Counsel role will assist in developing and providing strategic legal advice relating to Cigna's cost containment programs, out-of-network strategy, and Special Investigations Unit. This role will be responsible for researching and analyzing legal questions and risks to facilitate the development and presentation of strategic advice and counsel to matrixed partners across the Cigna enterprise, including stakeholders in business, legal, and regulatory roles. Successful candidates will be able to work collaboratively with multiple partners and harmonize objectives; communicate complex concepts and ideas with clarity and precision to legal and non-legal personnel; possess superior listening skills and be open to understanding and synthesizing multiple points of view; and demonstrate an ability to think creatively and strategically to anticipate business needs and mitigate potential risks.
This role requires an individual with exceptional judgment, collaboration, and communications skills. Ideal candidates will have an understanding of current and emerging business, legal, and regulatory trends in the healthcare industry and have a passion for working in the healthcare ecosystem.
Responsibilities


  • Monitor regulatory and litigation developments impacting Cigna's out-of-network strategy and cost-containment programs.

  • Provide legal advice in connection with provider investigations, disputes, arbitrations and mediations.

  • Efficiently analyze complex legal issues and provide timely and practical guidance.

  • Assist in developing processes to identify and mitigate legal risk.

  • Promote a culture of compliance, accountability, transparency, and ethical decision-making.

  • Assist in responding to state and federal regulatory inquiries.

  • Work on projects independently and as part of multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Assist in presenting legal guidance and advice to business partners orally and in writing.


Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor required.


  • 4-8+ years of legal experience in law firm or in-house legal department settings.

  • Mix of litigation and business counseling experience.

  • Experience in healthcare industry and/or working knowledge of health insurance business and regulatory principles also preferred.

  • Strong team player focused on client objectives.

  • Ability to work effectively in complex matrix reporting structures; learn quickly in fast-paced environments; and think ahead to anticipate needs of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to independently and successfully manage a high volume of matters.

  • Self-starter with a passion for learning, excellence, and providing sophisticated and creative legal advice.

If you will be working at home occasionally or permanently, the internet connection must be obtained through a cable broadband or fiber optic internet service provider with speeds of at least 10Mbps download/5Mbps upload.

For this position, we anticipate offering an annual salary of 132,700 - 221,100 USD / yearly, depending on relevant factors, including experience and geographic location.

This role is also anticipated to be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan.
