Role description:

Arcadis is seeking an Ecologist/Wetland Scientist to join our Enviro-Socio Permitting (ESP) team in the greater Milwaukee or greater Chicago area. For this mid-level position, we are seeking an individual with approximately five years of experience that includes leading field data collection efforts associated with wetlands delineations, endangered species habitat assessments, and environmental assessments to support a variety of projects in the Midwest. Most of the work will be based in the upper Midwest, but there may be opportunities for travel to a wide variety of projects and locations throughout the United States. This role will support Arcadis' clients throughout the United States, including various electrical transmission, natural gas pipeline, and renewable energy development projects. The Projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse. The position will require a candidate to work both independently, lead team tasks, and have the capacity to balance varying priorities and tasks to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deliverable deadlines.

This position will require both field and office work, and the ability to adapt to a dynamic schedule. The position will largely assist with wetland delineations, biological habitat assessments, general environmental assessments, reporting, agency coordination, and permit compliance. Up to 60% overnight travel is anticipated in this role.

Role accountabilities:


  • Lead field efforts including wetland determination/delineation surveys, flora/fauna surveys, habitat assessments, and manage the associated reporting.
  • Collect data during field surveys using handheld tablets utilizing Field Maps, Survey 123, and other geographic information systems (GIS) software.
  • Assist with the development of permit applications, including state and federal U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Section 404/Section 10 permits and Section 401 Water Quality Certifications.
  • Lead agency consultations regarding threatened and endangered species and support species and habitat surveys.
  • Assist with writing and preparing technical reports, work plans, letters, and memoranda.
  • Manage desktop environmental assessments using GIS and other available methods to address potential permitting constraints.
Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or similar environmental discipline.
  • Two or more years of experience leading wetland delineation field surveys using the USACE Midwest and Northcentral and Northeast Regional Supplements and authoring delineation reports.
  • Experience using GPS/GIS data collection technology.
  • Ability to travel and work in the field, sometimes to remote locations.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience in environmental planning and permitting in the Midwest, including USACE Section 404/Section 10 permits and Section 401 Water Quality Certifications.
  • Wetland Professional in Training, Professional Wetland Scientist, or Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Assured Delineator certifications.
  • Advanced experience with ArcGIS, Google Earth, and other desktop mapping applications.
  • An understanding of FERC regulated projects and FERC reporting.
  • Familiarity with regional threatened and endangered species, coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and species-specific evaluation or survey experience.

The salary range for this position is $53560 - 95551 / year.
