This position offers a highly qualified, experienced individual the opportunity to perform a critical leadership role within the Acquisition Innovation Research Center (AIRC) at the Stevens Institute of Technology. The Deputy Chief Scientist works with the Chief Scientist and other AIRC leaders to collaborate between the AIRC and the Department of Defense (DoD), guide AIRC research projects, set and communicate the strategic direction of AIRC, and advise on administrative matters that affect AIRC research.

The successful candidate must possess superior scientific, management, planning, judgment and communication skills.

The ideal candidate will be someone who appreciates that technology is continually changing how enterprises develop and organize the systems that drive creative solutions, innovation and efficiency.

Responsibilities


  • Interface between AIRC and the DoD acquisition ecosystem—OUSD(A&S), OUSD(R&E), the military services, the combatant commands, and other parts of the DoD 4th Estate—serving to understand the practical needs of the DoD; helping to envision and develop innovative research in the AIRC; and ensuring the transition and application of AIRC results in acquisition policies, guidance, practices, reports, and workforce development.

  • Engage with collaborating faculty across the AIRC university network and HBCU/MI institutions to bring innovative research that addresses these priorities and is focused on the scientific and technical content, quality, and peer review of individual research projects within the AIRC.

  • Outreach to the DoD acquisition leadership and elements, relevant leadership within Defense Industrial Base, and other stakeholders to articulate the critical needs that AIRC research is addressing, the innovative approaches from AIRC, and the value proposition in improving acquisition outcomes.

  • Support the AIRC Chief Scientist.

  • Support SERC/AIRC operations and events in a leadership capacity.

Qualifications & Requirements


  • A university degree at the Ph.D. level with extensive experience in a technical discipline.

  • Minimum 20 years of experience across defense acquisition, technology, program management, and policy.

  • Knowledge and understanding of systemic challenges in the defense acquisition system is desirable.

  • Experience in data science or analysis is an advantage.

  • Current DoD clearance at the SECRET level or above is a plus.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This position requires access to information that may be subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license. As a result, US citizenship or U.S. Persons status is required.
