Senior Underwriter, Complex Casualty at Chubb

Sr Underwriter, Complex Casualty – Mid-Atlantic Region


  • Manage a portfolio of casualty business including managing renewals and new business opportunities. This may include multiple casualty lines of coverage including Primary GL, Construction and GL Plus.

  • Work with 6 branches within the Mid-Atlantic Region including: Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, DC and Richmond.

  • Work with Commercial Insurance and Field Operations team to cultivate relationships with agency partners.

  • Achieve new business and retention objectives

  • Structure casualty programs including pricing, terms and conditions

  • Works collaboratively with Manager, Underwriting Associate and other unit and region colleagues

  • Adhere to all underwriting standards and guidelines as outlined by the Division including all applicable Underwriting Guidelines, Authorities and Position Papers

  • Adhere to guidelines for accurate and timely policy issuance, accurate premium booking and billing, manuscript form and endorsement processes, and file construction and documentation

Required Skills


  • Experience underwriting general liability, automobile and excess umbrella exposure. Environmental underwriting experience desired, but not required.  Understanding of key underwriting concepts, best practices, and procedures.

  • Ability to identify risk exposures, special or common hazards, and appropriate controls. Ability to select risks based on exposure and risk analysis. Ability to analyze claims and quantify losses.

  • Ability to use systems and software programs needed to conduct daily business.

  • Marketing and communications experience is a must and includes both sales and negotiations skills.   Ability to make presentations and communicate articulately. Ability to base communications on strategic thinking. Ability to manage producer strategy.

  • Written and oral communication to internal and external audiences

  • Agency management is critical.  Work with agents on books of business including new, renewals as well as any additional questions or services that help drive opportunities.

Minimum Experience Requirements


  • 5+ years underwriting experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or corresponding insurance coursework

  • Multiple lines underwriting experience a plus

  • Knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, and procedures

  • Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Internet usage

  • Oral and written communication skills

  • Marketing & Negotiation skills
