We approach problems with creativity and innovation.  The Denver, Colorado office is seeking a Project/Senior Geotechnical Engineer to support our growing office and region.  We are looking for an experienced, motivated candidate with attention to detail, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong multi-disciplinary team. 

The Denver office of Schnabel focuses on the evaluation and design of dams, structures, and facilities as well as advancing our practice of risk informed decision making within our Dam Engineering Business Unit. Example projects include the inspection, evaluation and design of embankment and concrete dams (new and rehabilitations), spillways, outlet works, and instrumentation as well as performing risk assessments for dam owners for sites located across the United States.

Job Responsibilities:

Perform the following geotechnical and dam engineering tasks:


  • Perform engineering activities throughout all phases of a project lifecycle, including field inspections, subsurface explorations, evaluation, analysis, design, and engineering services during construction. 

  • Review instrumentation data and prepare instrumentation layouts and designs.

  • Prepare and review design calculations, engineering reports, construction drawings and technical specifications.

  • Provide engineering support on geotechnical projects during the design and construction phases of projects.

  • Planning and performing subsurface investigation and testing programs

  • Project and task management.

  • Proposal development.

  • Scheduling, coordination, and oversight of junior staff during subsurface investigations and deliverable development.

  • Performing geological and geotechnical engineering analysis.

  • Preparing field test logs and geological/engineering reports.

  • Perform and oversee construction observation of specialty geotechnical works and foundation construction.

  • Development of geotechnical drawings and specifications.

  • Must be willing to travel; some overnight travel should be expected.

  • Work as a team member within the Denver office and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources.

Required Skills/Experience:


  • 10+ years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Geological Engineering is required

  • Master’s Degree in Geology, Geological Engineering or Civil Engineering is preferred

  • Licensed Professional Engineer with the ability to obtain reciprocity

  • Previous rock slope evaluation, remediation design, and construction experience is a plus

  • Prior experience with Dam Engineering, foundation/geotechnical designs, subsurface investigations, and geotechnical recommendation reports is preferred.

  • Knowledge of design codes including IBC and AASHTO

  • Valid driver’s license and dependable transportation

  • Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, gINT (OpenGround), AutoCAD, MicroStation, and data management computer programs  

  • Experience with geotechnical analysis and design software such as: GeoStudio (Slope/W and Seep/W), Rocscience products (Slide, Dips, RocFall, RocPlane, Settle3D), Bentley products (OpenGround, Leapfrog)

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills

  • Ability to multi-task

  • A strong work ethic and the desire to perform professionally at a high level

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team

  • Attention to detail and well-organized

For candidates in Colorado the salary range is between $75,000 to $125,000
