House Supervisor (Nursing Admin) - Per Diem, Variable (Tustin)

The House Supervisor is responsible for managing and supervising the delivery of safe, effective patient care, ensuring the quality of nursing practice, and maintaining clinical nursing practice skills and unit specific expertise. Assigns duties and functions to staff based on their relative skills, training and abilities. Directly supervises Charge Nurses, staff RNs, LVNs, and CNAs/Mental Health Workers and is responsible for ensuring that all team members perform their respective duties in accordance with Hospital policy and standards of care. In addition, responsible for all departments and operations of the facility in the absence of hospital administration. Specific duties include hiring, evaluating, coaching, counseling and disciplining of employees; directing patient care activities; implementing staffing plan for shift based on patient acuity, patient census, and available staff; implementing work place changes; monitoring unit budgets; and participating in performance improvement projects. Serves as a role model and clinical resource to colleagues, staff, patients and others.

Job Responsibilities/Duties


  • Oversees and coordinates the daily operations of the facility, resolving issues as they occur based on the supervisor's judgment. Demonstrates advanced level of clinical expertise, strong leadership and collaborative skills in dealing with staff and members of the healthcare team. Acts as a coach and positive role model for staff by establishing and maintaining a safe work environment that fosters positive morale. Responsible for scheduling, directing and assigning RNs based on supervisor's assessment of patient care needs, relative skills and abilities of staff and input from the Charge RN. Also responsible for coaching, training, hiring, counseling, and performance assessments based on the supervisor's assessment of staff development and RN performance as well as input from the Charge RN.
  • With the assistance and input of the Charge RN on the unit, assigns and directs staff in the administration of patient medications, treatments and procedures in a safe, effective and age appropriate manner, as applicable. Recognizes changes in patient conditions and directs staff response, including identification of appropriate actions and documenting intervention. Effectively collaborates with the health care team to intervene, and advocate as necessary to ensure Hospital policies and patient care standards are met. Intervenes appropriately in instances of abuse, assault or neglect, or when adequate financial or social resources are not available. Makes appropriate referrals to resolve patient issues effectively.
  • Effectively and efficiently manages bed and patient placement by coordinating patient throughput. Ensures appropriate and safe staffing levels based on patient census and acuity. Supervises contract labor, including ensuring appropriate credentialing, and conducting necessary orientation and performance evaluations. Responsible for ensuring that employees' nursing practice is evidence-based, within scope of licensure, and compliant with Hospital-wide standards of nursing care. Ensures institutional compliance with professional, accrediting and regulatory standards of care. Ensures Infection Control procedures and HIPAA compliance procedures are followed by staff.
  • Collaborates with staff and other members of the healthcare team, ensuring the coordination of care between other disciplines and support staff. Supervises, monitors, and delegates patient care activities to appropriate members of the health care team with the assistance of the unit Charge RN, provides effective leadership and responsibly ensures that care is safe and of high quality. Acts as a source of information and articulately responds to questions, providing resources, guidance, and education about diagnosis, course of treatment, and similar topics. Develops and implements accurate teaching and safe discharge processes.
  • Provides effective oversight, direction and guidance to staff and operations to ensure quality patient care, including conducting audits of employees' activities and documentation and directing corrective measures where needed. Appropriately educates and mentors employees on all aspects of patient care, as needed. Ensures compliance with applicable policies and standards of patient care. Demonstrates problem-solving, critical thinking, and prioritization of work to resolve issues as they arise in an appropriate and timely manner. Identifies situations to be addressed through discipline and decides the appropriate level of discipline based on the relevant facts and input from the Charge RN.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or actively in progress of BSN required. Master's Degree in Nursing or related field (Health Administration, Business, Public Health, or Management) preferred.

Minimum Experience: Two (2) years of nursing experience with a minimum of one (1) year in a leadership role in a hospital environment required. Strong time management skills and ability to effectively prioritize tasks. Understanding of patient classification and staffing requirements for the patient population. Two (2) years of progressive management experience in a hospital environment preferred.

Req. Certification/Licensure: Active, current, and unencumbered Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California required. AHA Basic Life Support and AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support required. AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (except Van Nuys, and Bellflower) required. Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only) required.
