Job Summary



Reporting to the Executive Director of the Data Science Institute, the Open Source Software Engineer (OSSE) will support the development of code and open source software that assists in the execution of research priorities of the institute, its faculty, fellows and graduate students. They will collaborate with the rest of the Engineering Team to support and engage with interdisciplinary research groups across the University of Chicago to determine requirements, iterate on architectural specifications, and produce robust and scalable systems that meet identified needs in computer, mathematical, and natural science data-based research. The Software Engineer will perform a variety of activities related to analysis, design, development, debugging, and modification of computer code for software and configuration management. Some amount of time in this role will allow for development of the applicant's own open source software contributions, research and non-assigned software projects to advance their career, knowledge, and stay aware of and engaged with emerging technologies and trends in the open source software community.

A portion of this role will directly support the AI and Science Postdoctoral Program and PI/faculty collaborators on this program, which is focused on training a generation of domain scientists with deep theoretical and practical understanding of artificial intelligence. Interest in and understanding of machine learning and artificial intelligence is preferred in candidates applying for this position.



Responsibilities



  • Designs, building, testing and debugging new and existing complex software programs.


  • Manages and successfully move forward multiple complex open source projects simultaneously, supporting faculty and postdoctoral scholars in their research aims.


  • Devises and implement algorithms.


  • Deploys systems in simulation and on physical hardware.


  • Resolves complex system software problems.


  • Independently execute feature requests from stakeholders, relying on the PI and project manager primarily for general direction, goal setting, and design outlines.


  • Collaborates with team members in developing software that improves testability and fault-tolerance, striving to improve the quality of software of individual team members as part of improving the overall system-level quality.


  • Designs new systems, features, and tools. Solves complex problems and identifies opportunities for technical improvement and performance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensure appropriate standards are met.


  • Acts as a technical consultant and resource for faculty research, teaching, and/or administrative projects.


  • Perform other related work as needed.

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Education:



  • Master's degree in computer science or related field.





Experience:



  • Experience in software engineering or programming field.


  • Experience with software development practices.


  • Software design experience.


  • Ability to work with substantial existing codebases.


  • Excellent project management, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, decision-making, and written and verbal English communication skills.


  • Ability to work effectively and productively in a highly dynamic hybrid environment across all levels with faculty, staff, students, and other members of the UChicago community.


  • Background in building web applications and APIs that power them.


  • An interest in and experience writing software to support data-driven applications and research.





Technical Skills or Knowledge:



  • Experience with Linux, ROS, and/or with C++ and Python.


  • Understanding of software development practices, including git-based version control and CI/CD.





Preferred Competencies



  • Experience in one or more of the following--computer vision, optimization, time-series forecasting, natural language understanding, data mining, and/or visualization; research experience developing and testing machine learning models; familiarity with one or more cloud platforms; and experience with virtualization and containerization.


  • Experience with academic research.


  • Experience in applied machine learning.


  • Experience with scientific computing.


  • Past work with faculty and or students in higher education.
