The Opportunity:

Central to Urban’s mission is fostering a truly inclusive community that ensures ongoing relevance to a changing world. The Urban Institute’s Executive Office is seeking a Policy Program Manager to support research and programmatic coordination. Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President for Research and Program Management, the Policy Program Manager will work across Urban’s extensive research programs to support the collective, coordinated advancement of the Senior Vice President’s priorities.

This person will be an exceptional communicator, who is adept at navigating complex internal dynamics and can rapidly develop a deep understanding of Urban’s work. The ideal candidate is experienced in policy research and brings a strong interest in complex, intersectional research and policy areas and a deep commitment to Urban’s mission and to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What You’ll Do:

  • Support research and program development priorities across Urban Institute, including strategic plan implementation, quality assurance and research support, and the development of relevant metrics on research activities and outcomes.

  • Support the Senior Vice President and advance executive office priorities and workstreams in coordination with the Senior Vice President’s team.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Executive Office to maximize alignment and the efficient flow of information from research and program functions with finance, operations, communications, and development.

  • Support potential management solutions through coordination with other Urban research centers to accelerate the development of actionable knowledge including the implementation of our strategic plan.

  • Plan, coordinate, and lead internal meetings, including preparing agendas, talking points, and staffing events for the Senior Vice President.

  • Write memos, talking points, strategy briefs, blog posts, and other policy-related documents.

  • Respond to time-sensitive requests, convening relevant experts, soliciting stakeholder input, and developing recommendations for the Senior Vice President team.

What you’ll bring:

We are seeking a candidate with a strong background in research administration and project management who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment and can bring diverse stakeholders together to develop and execute on shared goals.

The successful applicant will:

  • Possess a master’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Public Administration, Urban Studies, Sociology, or a related field – or the equivalent combination of academic and professional experience that is generally associated with a Master’s degree.

  • Have a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience, including substantive policy, research administration, and organizational management experience.

  • Demonstrate deep interest in and passion for the strategic importance of research as a means of generating new knowledge and for policy impact.

  • Exhibit strategic skills, including exceptional organizational and writing stills, and the ability to ask good questions, identify new opportunities, and use good judgment to prioritize tasks while responding to quick turn-around requests under tight deadlines.

  • Have experience working with researchers, policymakers, or philanthropic and/or private sector leaders, and the ability to engage and communicate effectively with experts across a variety of research practice areas.

  • Be “customer focused” - committed to solving problems and closing loops - and comfortable “managing up, down, and across,” with strong interpersonal skills and experience managing cross-organization collaborative projects and working in team environments.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office products (specifically, Word and Excel), Smartsheet, Salesforce or other project management tools.

What You’ll Experience:

No matter your role with Urban, you will contribute to meaningful work that makes a difference for people and communities across the country. And whether you call the Washington, DC area or elsewhere home, you can expect to be part of a welcoming and hybrid workplace. We are committed to cultivating a community and working in a manner defined by collaboration, equity, inclusivity, independence, and integrity.
