Department Overview
The Registered Nurse at the Comprehensive Pain Center has primary responsibility for, and provides direct and indirect professional nursing care for, Comprehensive Pain Center patients. The RN assesses patient and family needs and implements and evaluates care delivered per the plan of care, in accordance with professional standards, core values and with a commitment to service excellence.

Function/Duties of Position

The OHSU Clinical registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. The Clinical RN's care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics. Assists with provider visits and procedures in the Comprehensive Pain Center. This may include starting IVs, providing conscious sedation, and monitoring patients before, during and after diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
Documents care provided.
Responds to patient and nursing questions.
Provides post-visit instruction/education, enters orders as requested.
Follows up patients by telephone following procedures to assess status.
Responds to patient's questions/needs in person and via telephone.
Responds to nurse triage.
Coordinates care and with providers and patients.
Assesses patient status and gives telephone advice to ensure timely response to patient care needs, alert physician and documents advice given.
Performs other duties needed to ensure smooth patient flow and clinical operations. Provides back-up for rooming clinic patients, nurse triage support, taking vital signs, cleaning rooms, stocking linen and supplies.
Provides back-up to charge RN and may function as charge RN in their absence. Performs other duties as assigned.
Participates in ongoing professional development and competency assessment. Maintains knowledge of life safety, patient safety, fire and electrical safety and disaster plan.
Responds appropriately in emergency situations.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Associate or Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
BSN preferred
Associate Degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire.
Experience:
Two years experience as RN
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
Knowledge of nursing procedures, including starting IVs, conscious sedation.
Excellent communication and organizational skills, strong triage skills.
Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:
Current, unencumbered Oregon RN license
Current BLS required at time of hire
Current ACLS certification at time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
Experience:
Experience in both ambulatory and hospital settings.
Experience in an ICU, PACU, surgical or procedural setting.
Prior experience working with chronic pain patients.
Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses:
ONS certification
OCN certification
Pain Management Nursing certification
Additional Details
Orientation Time:
6-8 weeks depending on experience.
Typically works 10 hour shifts
All procedures occur at CHH1 (single location)
The work environment carries risk of exposure to human tissue/fluids and radiation.
This position is required to wear a lead apron for several hours at a time.
Must be able to deal with competing needs and priorities of internal and external customers, including making correct judgments regarding ensuring safe conditions for patients, families, and other personnel.
