The Laboratory Assistant will perform technical and clerical duties related to the preparation of laboratory specimens for processing and testing. The Laboratory Assistant will perform pre-analytic, post- analytic, and data management activities in compliance with MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center Laboratory Services department standards and procedures. The incumbent will demonstrate the skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served.
Essential Job Outcomes
Meet department specific competency in pre-analytical skills. Log surgical specimens and verifies completeness and accuracy of information. Prepare specimens for processing and examination. Perform specimen processing for referral testing to reference laboratories correctly and efficiently. Picks-up specimens in selected areas of the campus.
Meets department specific competency in analytical skills. Perform routine stains and assist pathologists with frozen sections.
Meets competency in loading the tissue processor, use of the auto stainer and coverslipper, cryostat, and cassette engraver.
Proficient in the use of the current Laboratory Information System for data management. Ability to investigate and follow-up on requested tests and results for physicians and clients. Act as a resource person to assist in resolving issues and providing instruction to others.
Meets competency for data management and documentation activities. Compile data and maintains records and files e.g. logs, reports, blocks, slides. Provide patient reports for consultation and continuum of care send outs. Provide timely distribution of pathology reports.
Adhere to CAP and other regulatory guidelines in all areas of the laboratory. Participates in department Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement program.
Ensures QC activities as performed daily relevant to scope of duty. Ensure temperatures are read daily and preventive maintenance of equipment is performed according to laboratory protocol. Ensure inventory of department supplies are maintained at proper levels.
Actively participate in environment of safety activities, for department specific and campus-wide e.g. hazardous material spill protocols, fire drills, coded drills, etc.
Promotes a cooperative and efficient environment and actively participate in current department Gallup Impact plan.
Provide quality laboratory service to clients, patients, physicians and peers. Provide quality customer service with the use of AIDET in communicating with all patients and visitors.
Pay Range: $22.64/hr - $ 32.82/hr
Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. Minimum of one year experience in the clinical laboratory and acute care setting preferred.
Knowledge of specimen collection techniques, equipment and specimen handling preferred.
High School graduate or equivalent requirred.
Knowledge of current information system preferred.
