The role you’ll contribute:

The Electromyography Technician under the general supervision of a physician and following established policies and procedures, performs nerve conduction studies and other neurophysiologic studies as requested by physician(s).  The EMG Technician provides technical and ancillary support to the department through demonstrated clinical academic competency.  Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

  • Assists with rooming patient for appointments, obtains accurate temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight, and documents accurately in the practice’s designated system when required.
  • Performs a full range of neurological test(s) to include various types of nerve conductions (EMGs) other neurophysiologic tests as assigned.  Documents test in an accurate, complete and timely manner.
  • Updates patient’s demographics in electronic medical chart; obtains accurate patient history and assess the age specific needs of each patient.  Prepares patient for exams required and ensures patient safety, comfort and modesty at all times.  Outlines the nature of the procedures and tests with the patient; answers any concerns or refers the patient to a nurse of physician is necessary.
  • Determines the electrodiagnostic studies to perform based on the physician order.  Ensures the exams requested match patient condition and/or history and communicates with nurses and physicians regarding any questions or specific clinical aspects of the tests.
  • Sets up equipment as necessary and performs techniques. Understands the equipment and other electrophysiological devices and procedures.  Works through physician’s requirements to provide appropriate testing and provides additional variations of techniques as requested.  Removes, discards, or cleans Nerve Conduction electrodes in accordance with universal precautions.
  • Records all patient charges for studies performed.
  • Monitors patient’s condition and if it is determined assistance may be required, the employee takes action to facilitate the best course of care to include: medical assistant involvement, future monitoring and/or other patient focused solutions.
  • Maintains a high standard of cleanliness in the testing rooms.  Prepares testing rooms with clean linen and all necessary equipment and supplies.  Ensures the proper care and sterilization of resuable electrodes, testing rooms an associated areas. 
  • Ensures sufficient and appropriate inventory of EMG-related supplies.  Conducts quality control testing of equipment as necessary.  Ensures proper maintenance and function of the equipment through interactions with both internal and service vendors to maximize equipment up-time, patient care, and minimize dollar impact to the practice.
  • Assists with the scheduling of EMG procedures or follow-ups.  Provides patients with any documentation as required related to their EMG/Nerve conduction study (NCS) testing.  Performs related clerical duties as needed.
Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:

Minimum qualifications:


  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) year EMG experience or Certified Nerve Conduction Technologist (CNCT)
  • Basic Life Support/CPR certification

Preferred qualifications:


  • Certification or eligible for certification with the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologist (AAET) preferred and highly desirable.  Previous experience and education commensurate with this position will be considered, preferably with a background in other healthcare related fields (e.g. RN, LPN, OT, PT).
