St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea is a 133-bed, not-for-profit hospital established in 1970 leading the way in patient safety in satisfaction. Located in Chelsea, Michigan, SJMC is a joint venture between Saint Joseph Mercy Health System and University of Michigan Health. SJMC is one of only 19 hospitals nationwide with the distinction of having a double, five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The Inpatient Behavioral Health unit provides short-stay mental health services for adult patients, including ECT and dual diagnosis treatment. The 30-bed unit offers a therapeutic environment with the utmost attention to patient safety. There is a traditional structured environment, while another area offers an opportunity for expanded patient boundaries in preparation for returning home.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Patient assignment includes managing medication, collaboration with nursing and therapists around patient care and discharge planning, family meetings, and communication with the patient's PCP and outpatient treatment team.

Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participates in their resolution.

Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea/Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

Understands legal issues that affect treatment, including but not limited to: child custody, divorce laws, child/adult abuse, duty to warn, recipient rights policies and procedures, alternative treatment orders (ATO's), and the commitment process for inpatient hospitalization.

Maintains knowledge to perform the duties of the job. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

Demonstrates ability to give theoretical explanation for medical care.

Demonstrates knowledge of medications used with the patient population

Demonstrates ability to communicate the physiology of various treatment modalities

Demonstrates diagnostic skills

Formulates/revises treatment plans and goals with physician consultation

Demonstrates ability to prioritize goals, using competent medical judgment

Maintains/revises patient medication plan, following established protocols, after physician consultation

Demonstrates ability to manage high-risk situations

Monitors diagnostic results and reviews with the physician

Maintains communication with referring physicians

Demonstrates ability to work independently, flexibly and self-critically

Meets with patients/family members to provide detailed explanation of the treatment plan

Coordinates the discharge process, giving input to the treatment team

Practices within the scope of the Michigan Nurse Practitioner License

Maintains documentation in the medical record, following hospital standards

Dictates discharge summaries for final review by the medical director or his designee

Completes medication reconciliation sheet at discharge

Other Functions and Responsibilities

1) Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience and Certification/Licensure

1) Nurse Practitioner licensed by the State of Michigan

2) At least two years experience as an NP in a psychiatric setting is required
