The Role:

This is an exceptional opportunity for a talented, motivated and proven leader to advance our current preclinical portfolio and shape how we use Moderna's technology for immune-mediated cancer treatments of the near future. We have advanced 5 Development Candidates into Clinical Development and the new Executive Director will help bring the next wave(s) of impactful mRNA-based experimental medicines to cancer patients. She/he/they will focus on discovery and preclinical development of new cancer therapies with Oncology Research team members as well as representatives from multiple functions across the company. Applicants should have experience driving discovery efforts from lead identification/optimization through to IND-filing, yielding promising clinical candidates. The successful candidate must be an outstanding and rigorous scientist, an extremely effective leader, a great team player, exemplary communicator, and thrive in a fast-paced/results-oriented environment managing several projects.

Here's What You'll Do:

  • Help form overall strategy primarily with Oncology Leadership and our Strategy team, including identifying patient populations of focus with clear articulation of scientific rationale while balancing competitive landscape and medical need.

  • Oversee our discovery and early preclinical development efforts to advance new immune-oncology approaches from discovery through IND filings.

  • Identify specific signaling axes to modulate and generate concrete concepts of how our technology should be deployed for gain and loss of function approaches utilizing encoded endogenous, novel discovered and/or engineered proteins.

  • Provide guidance to Program Leaders and serve as Program Leader where necessary in cross-functional teams that may include representatives from Toxicology, DMPK, Pharmacometrics, Quantitative Bioanalytics, Translational Research, CMC, Regulatory, Clinical, etc. (depending on degree of development).

  • Help define program timelines as well as interdependencies, risks, avenues to mitigate risks.

  • Author, review and present; e.g., for internal and external presentations (from Program Team Meetings to International Conferences to EC/Board Meetings), journal articles, study reports, and IND sections.

  • Identify, connect with and help manage world-class external collaborators, partners, CROs, vendors.

  • Provide expert immune-oncology, general scientific and technical guidance to team members.

  • Supervise and mentor several scientists and help direct reports effectively manage their reports.

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:

  • Ph.D. in Cancer Biology, Immunology, Immuno-oncology (IO), Pharmacology or related field relevant to the role with 15+ years of overall experience and >8 years drug discovery/preclinical development experience in industry.

  • Proven record in leading IO drug discovery efforts including vast knowledge of the field in general and relevant in vitro/ex vivo, in silico and in vivo animal model systems.

  • Experience bringing new programs to the clinic, in some cases as Program Leader, including establishment of Proof of Concept in appropriate ex vivo/in vivo models, and shepherding cross functional efforts through IND-filing.

  • At least 8 years leadership and management experience, including oversight of financial, IP and legal aspects.

  • Ability to effectively lead and collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional matrixed environment.

  • Experience working with and overseeing partnerships with academic, industrial, governmental and other non-governmental organizations.

  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with aggressive timelines.
