The Observation Supervisor - Direct and Virtual - is a professional responsible for providing shift supervision, direction and leadership to observation staff. S/he is directly responsible to the Nurse Director - Nursing Administration.
The role requires direct and virtual observation expertise and the ability to coordinate inter and intra departmental activities.
Patient Care Organization
•Assists with directing the operations of virtual observation team.
•Collaborates with the nurse administrator and staffing office to ensure coverage of direct observations throughout the hospital.
•Providers direct oversight of care quality related to patient observations, both virtual and direct.
Quality of Care
•Serves as consultant and resource to staff and professional colleagues regarding patient observation both virtual and direct.
•Participates in professional, institutional, and committee work across the organization.
•Works collaboratively with other departments to monitor overall quality standards for patients under observation.
•Applies theoretical and experiential knowledge of patient observation to meet the needs and safety of the patient.
•Implements, reviews and audits patient care policies and observation standards to ensure compliance of the observation staff.
•Directs operations and surveillance by providing guidance to the observation staff in real time.
•Provides leadership oversight to the observation staff, both virtual and direct, considering virtual observation metrics along with staff feedback on proper observation levels to maintain quality and safety standards.
•Establishes and maintains effective professional relationships with interdepartmental personnel, professional staff, and the community.
•Serves on Committees and Task Forces, Institution wide and Interdisciplinary.
•Provides feedback to the Nurse Director regarding the overall functioning of unit.
•Facilitates allocation of central resources in collaboration with Staffing Coordinators and Nurse Administrators.
Facilitation of Patient Observations
•Collaborates with all patient care areas and physician staff to ensure we have the level of patient observation on all patients in need throughout the facility.
•Monitors observations for compliance with hospital policy.
•Coordinates and communicates with ancillary staff as necessary to assure quality and safety standards are met.
•Maintains flexibility with time management based on unforeseen and predictable changes.
•Serves as patient observer when needed.
•Participates in the development of personnel policies for Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
•Assists in administration of personnel programs, including communication and implementation of personnel policies.
•Performs administrative functions for the Nursing Director as assigned; including auditing, coaching, education, and disciplinary measures as directed.
•Contributes to and encourages educational and professional development of observation staff by assisting them to identify and meet their learning needs.
•Assists in coordination of educational programs specific to unit/departmental needs.
•High School Diploma, Bachelor's Degree Preferred
•1 year of experience in virtual observation preferred
•1 year of experience in direct observation preferred
•Current certification as a Nursing Assistant preferred
•Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Knowledge and Skills:
•Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with patients and families, nursing staff, and other disciplines
•Must have demonstrated ability in management of diverse activities associated with or pertaining to patient observation
•Must possess solid clinical skills to provide direction, information, and explanation to all levels of hospital management and staff
•Must possess communication skills adequate to provide necessary direction, information, and explanation to all levels of hospital management and staff
The Observation Supervisor works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials. Other duties may include general cleaning with exposure to dirt, odors and cramped quarters, etc
