Job Description:

As a member of the Integrated Marketing and Communications (IMC) team within the Mass General Development Office, the Associate Director will work collaboratively with colleagues across the development office and the hospital to develop clear, compelling, high-impact new content. They will skillfully leverage existing content for digital marketing, proposals, stewardship reports, correspondence, marketing materials, event and marketing collateral, talking points, web and social media content, print publications and other communications pieces.


The Associate Director, Communications will partner with writing and other IMC team colleagues to identify new opportunities for creating and adapting compelling, donor-focused content. They will manage multiple projects simultaneously, under tight and shifting deadlines, and may collaborate with gift officers, clinicians, donors, staff and freelance writers, designers, digital creators and photographers as needed.


The ideal candidate will be a seasoned and versatile writer and communicator with outstanding editing skills. They will be a team player who is creative, flexible, personable, enterprising and entrepreneurial. They will also be a self-starter and strong finisher with a focus on customer service.

Primary Responsibilities



  • Develop, write and edit high-priority, high-impact proposals, stewardship reports, donor correspondence, talking points and event materials, fact sheets, website feature stories and other collateral on a wide range of topics in cooperation with hospital and development staff

  • Maintain a subject matter expertise and special focus on communications support of fundraising efforts for the Department of Psychiatry and Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR)

  • Shape and implement publications strategy for regularly scheduled communications

  • Develop story ideas from the Psychiatry and CFR teams for consideration for development and hospital wide promotion; participate in planning meetings as needed

  • Learn and leverage basic desktop design skills to lay out proposal and report copy in existing templates; collaborate with IMC team colleagues to continuously refine templates

  • Maintain customer service focus with all projects, keeping gift officers and other stakeholders informed of status of projects and content as it is published/used; ensure donor consent and approval; meet deadlines

  • Conduct outreach to build relationships with content providers, including faculty and leadership, across the hospital on a broad range of topics

  • Write and edit feature articles for electronic and print newsletters

  • Manage relationships and workflow with external vendors and consultants as needed, including photographers, designers and printers

  • Adapt/repurpose content for multiple formats and audiences

  • Carefully copy edit content for various platforms to ensure alignment with stylebook and brand

  • Participate in professional development including taking advantage of shadowing opportunities when appropriate

  • Prepare and regularly update progress reports

  • Contribute to maintaining positive office morale, even in the face of high work volume and challenging periods

  • Assist with recruitment activities as needed

  • Take on other office-wide duties at the request of Development leadership

  • Adhere to the mission, credo and standards of behavior of Mass General Hospital






Qualifications

Qualifications



This position requires 5-7 years of relevant experience in communications (development communications experience preferred) and a bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related discipline.


In addition, the ideal candidate will possess the following skills, abilities and attitudes.

  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills for print and digital content with an ability to translate complex information into lay language

  • Ability to provide thoughtful, constructive editing feedback to colleagues and gift officers and the ability to receive and incorporate constructive feedback from manager, donors, gift officers, researchers and/or clinicians

  • Ability to develop proposals that balance the priorities of donors, gift officers, researchers and/or clinicians

  • Excellent interviewer skills, with an ability to put subjects at ease (including donors, patients, clinicians and hospital leaders)

  • Basic knowledge of health care sector

  • Ability to motivate, engage and work collaboratively and enthusiastically with development, clinical and administrative staff at all levels

  • Ability to think strategically, evaluate potential problems and display sound judgment

  • The intellectual depth and maturity to garner the trust and confidence of hospital leaders, senior staff in the development office, clinicians, administrators and other colleagues

  • Ability to build bridges and strong collaborative relationships across a complex organization

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work autonomously under deadlines

  • Ability to deal with complex, fluid situations and relationships

  • Ability to take risks, to speak and act on conviction, intelligence, insight, initiative, resilience
