About this role

Hearst E-Commerce is looking for a Director of Business Intelligence to join our team. Reporting to the Executive Director of Finance, M&A and Analytics, this role will be responsible in developing key reporting and analyses to provide data-driven insights to executives to inform decisions on key initiatives. This is a highly visible individual contributor role that plays a crucial part in defining and executing our analytics strategy.

The Director of Business Intelligence will closely work with the engineering group and key stakeholders across Hearst divisions to streamline data gathering and will be involved in building everything from ad-hoc reports and dashboards, to providing retail insights on customer behavior that will drive business decisions.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop, automate, and own dashboards to provide insights at scale in addition to providing ad hoc analytics and insights
  • Responsible to build the data architecture and make visualization decisions supporting all e-commerce team initiatives, working with related teams across divisions
  • Work closely with the E-commerce executive team on identifying the metrics tracking the critical growth drivers, to ensure consistent, efficient understanding of contribution and progress of each initiative
  • Help shape E-Commerce Team strategy through data:

    • Identify important business and customer behavior trends through ad-hoc analyses across varied data sets
    • Analyze customer journeys to inform optimization
    • Forecast the business' future growth
  • Inform executives by surfacing insights about initiatives' performance
  • Work with the engineering team to produce and develop new data sets to serve business use cases
  • Present reports, findings, and analyses to senior leadership


  • Degree in math, engineering, statistics, econometrics, data science, or related quantitative field
  • 8+ years of experience in an analytical finance role (analytics, business intelligence, or similar); E-Commerce experience is preferred
  • Proficiency with SQL (BigQuery preferred)
  • Proficiency with any visualization tool (PowerBI, Tableau, Qlik, Looker, etc.)
  • Experience with web analytics (Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, or similar)
  • Experience with Python for data analysis
  • Experience with revenue modeling and forecasting
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to synthesize data and complex information, and present succinctly to executives and stakeholders at all levels
  • Comfortable working independently and making autonomous analytical decisions

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in New York City. The reasonable estimate, if hired in New York City, is $165,000-$185,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in New York City. If this role is open to candidates outside of New York City, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidate's starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
