In collaboration with the Maryland Department of Labor and Frederick Community College, we are seeking highly motivated individuals to join our Apprenticeship Program to support the production function in our Formulation Area.  In this team individuals will perform the formulation of all Media products, sterile filtration in a class 100 LFBSC, and maintain records to comply with Good Manufacturing Practices and Standard Operating Procedures.

Our Apprentice Program is a 3-year long program that provides you with the opportunity to jumpstart your career while pursuing a college education. During the program, you will receive a combination of paid on-the-job training while studying towards your associates degree, fully-funded, at Lonza’s partnering community college. Lonza’s Apprenticeship Program is registered with the Department of Labor, where you will receive a certificate of completion from the Department of Labor at the end of their program.

Three shifts are possible, depending on availability. First shift is Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM; Second shift is Monday – Friday, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM; Third shift is Sunday through Friday, 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM.

Apprentice Responsibilities:


  • Attend on-the-job training and perform day to day tasks within relevant department

  • Formulate liquid media products using an Electronic Batch Record

  • Formulate liquid media products using a Paper Batch Record

  • Weigh materials using various size balances

  • Operate various lab equipment: pH meter, Osmometer, Balance, Water Bath

  • Perform sterile filtration in a class 100 LFBSC

  • Hot Rinse formulation tanks

  • Maintain a clean and orderly area.  Completes cleaning logs

  • Perform aseptic processing with minimal operator related personnel excursions (EM)

  • Perform tasks and projects within the relevant department, but also learn about other aspects of the company

  • Support troubleshooting of processing and equipment issues

  • Observe and assist in development of standard operating procedures

  • Adhere to all safety procedures and GMP requirements

  • Complete all homework, tests, presentations, and other required evaluations in relation to your degree at partnering college

Basic Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Enrollment in Frederick Community College, Biotechnology AAS program

  • Ability to routinely lift 50 lbs.

  • Basic knowledge of Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) regulations.

  • Must have the ability to work in a fast paced environment and be able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities.

  • Must work well on a team, and be able to trouble shoot and problem solve in a cross-functional team setting. 

  • Ability to work overtime, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Ability to understand and execute written Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Master Batch Records

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cleanroom practices

  • Demonstrated knowledge of pharmaceutical manufacturing of biotechnology products, aseptic processing, cell culture products

  • Familiarity with documentation associated with manufacturing of biotechnology products
