Director, Occupational Health

Provides strategic thought leadership and directs the activities of the Evernorth Direct Health occupational health line of service. Assists in the strategic planning of complex programs and quality improvement efforts. Oversees the development, implementation of a complete occupational health line of service that is consistent with the mission, goals and objectives of Evernorth Direct Health and the Evernorth Care Delivery organization.

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Collaborates and acts as a thought leader on development of high-level mission, vision, and objectives for occupational health and its integration with Evernorth's Direct Health primary care strategy.


  • Creates and maintains a strategic plan for the development of occupational health programs, components, technology adoption, and training/integration.


  • Understands and recommends resource needs of the program for the implementation of the occupational health line of service, as well as addressing the need for additional programs, process, and systems at the enterprise level.


  • Provides guidance for the management of work-related medical conditions, compliance and enforcement of rules and procedures, legal and technical specialization in occupational population health management.


  • Provide consultative advice and expertise to Evernorth Direct health's occupational health clients on occupational exposure risks and mitigation strategies that comply with federal and state occupational health laws, i.e., OSHA, ADA, EEOC, etc.


  • Partners with business development to understand the competitive landscape to differentiate and enhance Evernorth's market position as well as monitor entrants in the marketplace.


  • Develops and implements the strategies, policies, programs, infrastructure, and systems needed to ensure the advancement of occupational health to include medical surveillance, occupational and work-related diseases, return to work programs, drug and alcohol management, occupational health compliance, infectious disease policies, risk assessment and management, travel medicine, and other health care programs as part of client services.


  • Identifies and analyzes the design of work processes, workflows and job roles for onsite and near site occupational health programs and implements appropriate changes to improve efficiency, productivity, and outcomes.


  • Establishes and ensures adoption of policies, procedures and related forms in accordance with federal and state regulations and internal organizational guidelines.


  • Oversees the relationship with the occupational health information systems/EMR vendor to ensure complete information and compliance with regulatory and client requirements.


  • Evaluates and develops patient education material for the occupational health setting that are literacy and culturally competent.


  • Develops occupational health clinician and staff job descriptions and competency assessments that align with standard operating procedures.


  • Works with the Human Resources team to establish recruitment strategies and onboarding requirements including credentialing standards.


  • Develops orientation and training for new employees in the occupational health program that aligns with general organization orientation.


  • Provides ongoing orientation to operations and other leaders to assure their effective oversight of occupational health programs.


  • Uses effective organizational change and communication strategies when implementing workflow redesign or new standards of practice.


  • Contributes to strategy for outcome measurement and research; works with Evernorth analytics and operations in the preparation of operational and statistical reports for management, clients and regulatory agencies.


  • Plans, develops and implements methods to evaluate and track the success of occupational health programs to ensure that services are effectively meeting client needs.


  • Maintains benchmarking knowledge implementing best practices comparable to industry expectations.


  • Develops and maintains audit tools to ensure accurate and complete occupational health recordkeeping and essential elements of compliance.


  • Ensures quality improvement by regularly assessing performance data and other strategic factors in the health care and occupational health environments, identifying opportunities for innovation and improvement.


  • Establishes the unique value proposition for the occupational health service line that also supports the primary care initiatives of Evernorth Direct Health.


  • Support the sales and operations teams throughout the sales cycle by assisting with RFP responses, sales presentations, and unique implementation challenges.


  • Works in partnership with Legal and Privacy to develop programs that meet federal, state and local health privacy standards, regulatory compliance (OSHA, CDC, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, HIPAA, and management of reputational issues.


  • Represents Occupational Health to the broader leadership within Evernorth Care Delivery and cross-functional teams.


  • Works with the Evernorth Direct Health Senior Medical Director, and other clinical leaders, in identifying emerging and existing health risks (beyond COVID) and providing consultation as it relates to chronic health and mental health in the workplace.


  • Collaborates with clinical team members to ensure validation of evidence-based occupational health clinical practices and captures feedback on the efficiency of planned clinical processes.


  • Identifies standards and accreditation bodies that are best suited to position occupational health programs in a competitive landscape.


  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, trends and best practices in occupational health by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals and actively participating in professional organizations.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • 10+ years' experience in progressive leadership roles in healthcare.


  • 5+ years' experience in occupational health strategies and policies.


  • Experience in leading start-up healthcare programs or service lines.


  • Clinical or Safety Certification from a national organization such as AAOHN, OSHA, FEMA, ANCC or the American Society of Safety Professionals.


  • Experience leading recognition initiatives with organizations such as Joint Commission, AAAHC, CARF, ISO, or the OSHA Star Program.


  • Excellent verbal and written skills working with diverse populations.


  • Effective use of data analytics skills, experience, and judgment.


  • Experience in a culture of customer service and patient-centered care.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Visionary with significant strategic planning and execution experience and strong operations experience in a complex corporate environment.


  • Work history in a multi-disciplinary environment.


  • Demonstrated history of working with senior leaders and employees at all levels.


  • Fundamental performance improvement knowledge and skills in methodologies such as Six Sigma/LEAN, DMAIC, PDCA).


  • Change management skills and experience in practices such as Lewin, Kotter's 8-Step Process or ADKAR.


  • Budget development and financial oversight skills.


  • Instructional design and orientation skills.

For this position, we anticipate offering an annual salary of 105,500 - 175,800 USD / yearly, depending on relevant factors, including experience and geographic location.

This role is also anticipated to be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan.
