Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties has a full-time opportunity for a Public Affairs Community Organizer in San Bernardino County, CA.

To implement grassroots and political efforts in order to bolster PPOSBC’s leadership in advocacy, grassroots organizing, and public education with specific focus on BIPOC communities. To develop and manage community outreach efforts in order to build a progressive activist base. To recruit, engage and mobilize targeted constituencies around reproductive rights issues.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:  Essential functions encompass the required tasks, duties and responsibilities performed as part of the job and the reason the job exists.

 

Grassroots Advocacy & Community Organizing


  • Manage advocacy and organizing efforts for targeted constituencies including Latinx and AAPI.

  • Manage grassroots activities such as canvassing, phone banking, town halls, rallies, etc.

  • Build an active base of involved Reproductive Rights’ leaders by mentoring existing activists into expanded roles and inviting in new volunteers.

  • Manage and staff tabling activities in the community and on college campuses.

  • Hold regular 1:1 meetings with key community figures in Orange and San Bernardino Counties.

  • Assist other staff as needed by providing materials, information and technical advice for grassroots advocacy in college campuses, health centers and the community.

  • Increase number of activists and members in the Community Action Fund database.

  • Develop relationship and partnership with local community and student groups.

  • Serve as a point person for advocacy groups and participate in outreach/visibility events as assig

Advocacy (Volunteer) Recruitment:


  • Perform all tasks necessary for the administering of the advocacy (volunteer) program: recruitment, providing information to prospective volunteers, conducting volunteer orientation, monthly volunteer nights, performance management etc.

  • Provide outreach to develop advocacy (volunteer) program in support of our operations.

  • Manage and maintain Community Action Fund advocacy databases, lists and resources. 

Electoral Work:


  • Recruit and mobilize volunteers to support pro-choice candidates through phone banks, precinct walks, and other grassroots efforts.

  • Represent agency at political events, and participate as needed in electoral activities.

  • Communicate as needed with other Planned Parenthood entities regarding activities, updates and timely issues.

Non-Essential Functions:


  • Ability to supervise volunteers and coordinate outreach and grassroots advocacy efforts, as well as demonstrated research skills.

  • Ability to self-motivate, great attitude, and a strong team player.

  • Proven ability to work with diverse communities.

  • Basic knowledge of online campaign tools and other political and advocacy databases helpful.

  • Advanced knowledge of Zoom functions.

  • Knowledge with VAN (Voter Action Network) and PDI (Political Data Incorporated), and other digital tools a plus.

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies, goals and philosophy of Planned Parenthood.

  • Knowledge of political campaigns and policymaking process at the local, state, and national level.

  • General knowledge of the history of reproductive rights in the United States, and in California.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Good judgment, the ability to work independently, and a professional appearance and attitude.

  • Accuracy and attention to detail essential.

  • Demonstrate specific community organizing expertise in one of three communities (African American, Latino or AAPI), in San Bernardino County.

  • The ability to function at a high level in a team-oriented environment is required, as is the ability to relate to diverse communities and to perform multiple tasks under deadline in a fast-paced environment.

  • Must be available to work flexible hours (including evenings and weekends) and travel, as required.

  • This position requires an employee to have a valid CA driver’s license, a reliable means of transportation and carry current auto insurance in compliance with the minimum requirements of the California Vehicle Code standards of bodily injury and property damage.

Minimum Education:


  • High school diploma or completion of GED required.

  • Bachelor of Arts Degree or equivalent experience.

Minimum Work Experience:


  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in community organizing, community outreach and/or advocacy engagement.

  • Experience with databases and list management is preferred.

  • A strong understanding of diverse communities and the ability to function within those respective communities at a grassroots level is a must.

Language Requirements/Preference:



  • This position prefers bilingual Spanish skills (reading, writing, and speaking). Qualified candidates will be tested for proficiency prior to offer.
