Job Description:

The Archaeologist for Oklahoma Department of Transportation works under supervision within a five person team of subject matter experts in identification and National Register of Historic Places evaluation of archaeological resources. As authorized agents consulting with the State Historic Preservation Office and other consulting parties, the Archaeologist conducts evaluations of prehistoric and historic-period archaeological resources for transportation undertakings. These projects largely include roadway and bridge improvements projects, participation and review of mitigation efforts for adverse effects to significant archaeological sites, and review and preparation of context studies. The work is a mix of oversight of consultant-prepared cultural resources survey and mitigation reports, with fieldwork and report preparation for in-house projects. The position provides for a mix of telework, fieldwork, and office work, as needed.

Essential Duties:


  • Conduct project tasks as an Archaeology Subject Matter Expert including status updates, project tracking, scope and work hour development, and other tasks as required.

  • Prepare and/or review the appropriate documentation as required by State and Federal laws and regulations.

  • Plan and conduct cultural resource surveys and research on Federal-aid and State-aid transportation projects.

  • Identify archaeological resources and evaluate their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.

  • Prepare and/or review documentation concerning such resources and effects to them in accordance with various State and Federal environmental laws and regulations.

  • Review and comment on consultant-prepared cultural resource reports, site documentation, and resources eligibility assessments.

  • Manage own time effectively while dealing with multiple priorities.

  • Review and advise on mitigation of adversely affected resources.

  • Read and understand plans, maps, and aerial photographs.

  • Communicate and work effectively with internal and external staff, agencies, consultants, and customers in a professional, cooperative manner.

  • Communicate ideas and facts to individuals and groups both verbally and in writing in a clear, professional, and organized manner.

  • Adapt to change including new Federal, State, or departmental policies and procedures.

  • Problem solve – generate and evaluate alternatives to recommend a sound solution applying the appropriate rule, policy, or procedure, or suggest new methods and procedures, as needed.

  • Work effectively with others to find mutually acceptable solutions.

  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.


Required Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field, AND:


  • 24 months of related research experience.

Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept a 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 72 months of related experience.

Skills:


  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines

  • Ability to communicate well and to handle multiple projects and deadlines

  • Technical writing skills

  • Knowledge of research methodologies and techniques

  • Project management experience

  • Knowledge of specialized terminology (e.g., scientific or technical)

Advertised Physical Requirements:


  • The Staff Archaeologist must be able to perform duties consistent with archaeological survey and report production. This will involve the ability to conduct research at libraries, museums, historical societies, and other research repositories.

  • The position requires archaeological survey involving walking on uneven terrain, climbing through fences, digging shovel tests, and in-field analysis and note taking of archaeological sites.

  • The position requires the ability to prepare and write reports of findings from archaeological surveys.

  • May be required to travel.

Departmental Preferences:


  • Completion of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field in accordance with the Secretary of Interior Qualification Standards for Archaeology (36 CFR 61) with requisite experience (i.e. experience in fieldwork (survey) and resource identification).

  • Possesses basic knowledge of the identification, evaluation, and management of archaeological resources to include demonstrated archaeological fieldwork consisting of survey, testing, and/or excavation procedures to include laboratory analysis experience (knowledge in this area is typically obtained through a Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field).

  • Demonstrated familiarity with Oklahoma archaeology

  • Possesses familiarity with related legislation such as the National Historic Preservation Act, Section 4(f) of the US DOT Act and competency in comprehending laws, policies, rules and regulations related to historic resources.

  • Experience with ArcGIS is a plus
