Job Summary:

The primary focus of this role is to carry out research, polymer synthesis/fabrication, and testing of novel formulations, materials and/or processes for developing innovative contact lens products including improvements to existing contact lens materials and processes.  The role will involve taking responsibility for designing, planning and the completion of experiments to ensure that the data generated is appropriately analyzed and reported.  The job holder will also be expected to support the Chemistry team with material development activities as appropriate.

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:


  • Develop new material/device forms with controlled release functionalities at the laboratory scale.

  • Perform standard release experiments and quantitative analysis of selected formulations.

  • Perform physical and chemical characterization of candidate formulations.

  • Correlate physical-chemical properties with their applicability and release kinetics.

  • Conduct and monitor stability experiments, identify potential stability and performance issues with candidate formulations, and ensuring complex data are interpreted in a scientifically correct way. Uses analyzed data to develop experimental strategy and to determine next steps.

  • Support the scale-up of developed formulations and bringing them to Pilot manufacturing

  • Generate comprehensive reporting and documentation of results and experiments, including preparation of presentations.

  • Present and discuss technical findings internally within a project team, with external collaborators or a scientific environment.

  • Conduct scientific literature searches on relevant subject matter and generate delivery form concepts based on sound scientific rationale.

  • Work effectively in a team environment with the ability to interface effectively with cross-functional teams.

  • Work with minimal guidance to design, develop and implement effective experimental strategies, analyses data, and leads a project team to execute experiments, while monitoring project requirements such as milestones and timelines.

  • May be involved in hiring, staff development, performance management, and other personnel activities.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Expert knowledge of polymeric biomaterial and excipients.

  • Knowledge of hydrogel polymer chemistry and related polymer synthesis highly desirable.

  • Experienced in microparticle fabrication technologies

  • Experienced in the use of Design of Experiments in formulation development.

  • Knowledge of statistical techniques.

  • Experienced with a variety of analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, LC-MS, particle sizing, zeta potential, etc.

  • Innovative mindset with excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Good project management experience

  • Effective teamwork and leadership skills

  • Ability to read and understand highly technical material and analyze data.

  • Technical Report writing experience.

  • Self-directed with ability to work independently on multiple, often conflicting, priorities.

  • Highly organized with proven ability to manage workload effectively and flexibility in accepting diverse work assignments as required by business needs.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

  • Recognized contribution with published patents, scientific publications, and/or product launch.

Work Environment:


  • The individual will be required to work in offices, clean rooms, manufacturing areas and laboratories.  The job holder may also be required to work at other Coopervision sites, and travel abroad if required.

  • Flexibility in working hours is required e.g. to meet deadlines i.e. working early/late/outside of normal hours.  The role is an exempt salaried position and does not pay overtime.

  • The role will require the individual to come into contact with hazardous materials or working environments. The individual will be required to wear/use the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the task in hand outlined in SOP’s including items such as lab coat, eye protection and gloves. The job requires the handling of materials that come under COSHH guidelines.

Experience:


  • Minimum of 2-6 years’ experience depending on degree level

Education:


  • Bachelor of Science degree with minimum 6 years’ experience in Formulation Science, Chemistry, or related field

  • Master of Science degree with minimum 4 years’ experience in Formulation Science, Chemistry, or related field

  • Ph.D. with minimum 2 years’ experience in Formulation Science, Chemistry, or related field
