Basis Qualifications:

Experience: Two years experience required relevant to the job description and working conditions below (one year experience must be Commercial HVAC experience, previous positions held which only involved typical household heating and cooling systems do not count towards this experience requirement). Knowledge of the principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration required. Fundamental electrical skills and the use of multi-meters required. A thorough understanding of safety procedures related to HVAC systems, UV lighting systems and lock out/tag out procedures is required.

Education Requirements: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Licenses and Certifications Requirements: State of Florida Class \"E\" driver's license or equivalent required. EPA Refrigerant "Universal" Certification required or become certified within 45 days of the hire date required. A physical exam and respirator fit test will be required within 30 days of the hire date (company will arrange).
General:
HVAC Level I craftsmen work independently by direction or with HVAC Level II craftsmen using basic knowledge of principles and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, properties of refrigerants, knowledge of the construction, and operation of a variety of HVAC systems.

Job Description:


  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and annual Periodic Maintenance (PM) inspections on all types of HVAC units.

  • Cleans units, changes filters, check belts or change if needed, and lubricate moving parts.

  • Checks and identifies units for other repairs.

  • Performs visual, audible, and mechanical checks for the proper temperature of conditioned spaces, the proper operation of different parts of the refrigeration cycle, proper oil levels, unusual noises, overheated bearings, loose connections, faulty insulation, frayed or loose belts, leaky gaskets or seals, worn pulleys, duct work deficiencies, servicing, loose connections, make splices, insulate exposed wires, replace fuses.

  • Accomplishes repairs on heating (natural gas, steam, hot water, heat pump) and cooling (refrigerant or chilled water) HVAC units such as; air handling units, condensers, thru-wall type, window units, packaged, self-contained, evaporative, fan coil, refrigerators, walk-in/reach-in coolers/freezers, ice machines, water coolers, air dryers, ventilation fans, and other equipment of comparative complexity.

  • Assists HVAC Level II/III craftsmen as needed.

  • Performs maintenance on UV lighting systems.

  • Complies with all OSHA safety regulations and adherence to proper codes and standards.

  • Uses Safety Data Sheets (SDS) to identify chemical characteristics.


  • Completes Work Orders and timecards daily and accurately.

  • Work also involves other duties as assigned, including compliance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and Employee Handbook.

  • Initiates material requisitions to order parts/materials needed for PM work orders.

Physical Effort: HVAC craftsmen often lift, carry, and handle materials, tools and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for at least 30 feet and extended periods. They occasionally work in cramped and inconvenient surroundings requiring manipulation of equipment in awkward positions for prolonged periods. Work frequently requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Must be able to ascend and descend on ladders of various heights. Make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding or platforms where parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places.

Working Conditions: The work is accomplished both indoors and outdoors, all climates, including working outside and on top of tall buildings, often exposed to hot sun for extended periods of time. Frequently works in cramped spaces, hot/cold attic spaces, areas with low overheads, and areas with hot/cold, oily, wet, and dusty surfaces. Mechanics are frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on refrigerated equipment such as walk-in coolers and freezers. The HVAC craftsman is exposed to moving parts and equipment, or machinery while working in and around HVAC units. May be called in for off-hours emergency situations including weekends and holidays. Limited work required in asbestos containing areas, company training and protective equipment provided. May be required to work the second shift. When notified by the SCADA Desk operator or Supervisor, the employee must arrive at the work site no later than 1 hour after being notified.
