The Lower Middle Market Segment Manager is a high-impact role within Commercial Insurance that is responsible for the development and implementation of the Lower Middle Strategy. This individual will work closely with the Head of North America Lower Middle Market and will be responsible for new revenue growth in this strategic initiative and developing a go-to market strategy that maximizes production with advanced book management, distribution management and people management skills. This individual will oversee a centralized team of 17 Underwriters and will be responsible for building out regional teams to support the aggressive growth plans of the segment.

Primary responsibilities:


  • Lead distribution engagement and new business production through multiple channels including but not limited to:


    • Lower Middle Market Team – centralized resources in the WUC/EUC that handle branch assigned producers.

    • CISA Underwriters – engage with the CI Regional Leaders and Field Operations to execute a staffing model that supports distribution expansion and maximizes CI production.

    • Regional LMM Teams – oversee the build-out of regional teams where LMM scale is achieved. Work with CI Regionals to identify, source and onboard LMM UWs to support regional production.



  • Result reporting and trend analysis for new revenue production and performance efforts across LMM with all distribution channels.

  • Engagement with CI Leadership to drive LMM production, travel as needed and work closely with senior leadership and regional leadership to execute on the LMM strategy.

  • Make independent decisions and recommendations to the NA Head of LMM, line of business managers, product managers, IP leads on the process for acquiring new LMM business.

  • Accountability for the performance management process for all staff including timely performance reviews, compensation planning and implementation and performance management as needed. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 


  • Accomplished underwriting skills and sales/marketing leadership.

  • A strong working knowledge of middle market P&C products, strategies, competitors, etc.

  • Experience in successfully managing all facets of our field distribution.

  • The position requires a candidate with both strong underwriting and relationship building competencies.

  • Demonstrated record of teamwork, leadership and integrity in building and sustaining internal and external relationships to achieve planned outcome.

  • Documented success in driving business results through producer and sales management skills.

  • Experience in developing and executing business plans and go-to market strategies.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills to ensure a clear, consistent message to customers, producers, employees and constituents.

  • Ability to incorporate customer perspectives within business and profit strategies.

  • Creative and can-do attitude that will rise to the challenge in the development of a new product (BMQ) and customer segment (LMM) within Commercial Insurance. 

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

  • 10+ years underwriting, book management, people management and managing all facets of our distribution is required, along with strong collaboration with various stakeholders; Line of Business managers, Product managers, Territory Underwriting Managers, Field leaders and senior leadership is required.
