Job Summary:

At an expert level, analyzes case level information and employs various underwriting risk assessment techniques depending on the appropriate approach for the specific customer. 

Key Responsibilities:


  • Develops supporting documentation for analysis and makes recommendations and/or pricing decisions internally to underwriting management and/or sales based on established authority level (case work). 

  • Mentors more junior underwriters in underwriting and risk assessment techniques to improve junior underwriters' skills. 

  • Leads internal, customer and broker dialogues in order to provide consultative support and recommendations based on the client specific considerations.  

  • Responsible for analysis and results of assigned book of business, including financial information and underwriting results.

  • Ensures appropriate actions on specific accounts that support the overall book of business objectives. 

  • Participates in and often leads multi-department projects that affect underwriting and related priorities. 

  • Maintains expertise in Health Care Reform, risk assessment, marketplace conditions, competitive landscape, and relevant business acumen.

  • May underwrite medical, pharmacy, and/or ancillary lines of business.

  • Serves as liaison to other underwriters experiencing technical rating issues. 

  • Responsible for completion of RFP's and RFIs.

  • Monitors and evaluates profitability on current lines of business and analyzes new business utilizing established underwriting criteria and policies to provide proper rating methodologies for customers.

  • Provides ongoing assistance to sales customers, brokers/consultants, and other internal customers with technical rating issues.

  • Point person in answering non-management related questions as posed by junior level underwriters. .

  • Serves in project lead capacity guiding related team members and tasks to completion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Expert knowledge of insurance concepts, underwriting, rating techniques and advance risk evaluation is required.

  • The ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities under tight timeframes.

  • Strong communications, analytical and mathematical skills as well as the ability to recognize, research and resolve discrepancies is required.   

  • Exhibits a prescribed level of proficiency across all competencies as defined in the Underwriting Competency Model.  In addition, each role within Underwriting has five specific competencies that are weighted heavier in the evaluation of performance. 

  • Must be detail oriented, skilled in problem solving, mathematics and algebraic concepts. In depth understanding of insurance concepts, and advanced understanding of rating techniques.

  • Must have advanced interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication and demonstrate leadership in various working relationships.

  • Knowledge of the Microsoft office suite of products (Access, Word and Excel), and advanced underwriting technology and support systems.

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. MBA preferred.

  • Minimum of 8 years progressive experience working in group insurance environment and 5+ years experience working in underwriting environment.  Can be concurrent experience.

  • Independence has implemented a “Hybrid of Choice” model which provides our associates with the flexibility to choose whether to work remotely, work in the office every day, or work in the office on certain days at their    discretion.  However, management may require our associates to work from Independence’s physical office locations on certain occasions. This role is designated as a role that fits into the “Hybrid of Choice” model. While associates may work remotely, the work must be performed in the Tri-State Area of Delaware, New Jersey or Pennsylvania.
