Job Description:

The Scripps National Team is seeking an experienced, national award-winning Correspondent that will be based in San Diego. The national correspondent will produce stories that air on newscasts within Scripps 41 markets, the national centralized newscast, and the company’s streaming shows.   

We care about storytelling. We’re looking for a strong writer who tells a story through personable characters. Our storytelling that connects the viewer to emotion and impact. We want to see work that highlights these skills and puts an issue in context. The successful candidate must have strong enterprise skills and be able to recognize topics that will resonate across the country. Our reporters work ahead to produce content that boosts local Scripps station newscasts. The ideal candidate has major market experience that goes beyond nuts-and-bolts coverage. 

A link to your reel must be included in your application materials and should showcase the requirements. We are not looking for a sizzle reel filled with stand-ups. Share links that show your very best story-telling abilities with great characters. 

WHAT YOU'LL DO: 


  • Create powerful stories with an emphasis on strong character-based storytelling. 


  • Develop and research news to develop story ideas. 


  • Uncover stories through investigation and research. 


  • Use computer database to research statistics and facts. 


  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories through interview, observation, and research. 


  • Organize material and write a story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards. 


  • Appear on television programs when conducting taped interviews or narration.


  • Give live reports from site of event or mobile broadcast unit. 


  • Write and produce quality news stories for multiple media platforms. 


  • Work cooperatively with photographer assigned to story. 


  • Assist online staff in preparing for multimedia stories. 


  • Travel for stories, when required.  


  • Report, write, capture visual content, edit and produce stories for multiple platforms on deadline, such as Internet and digital channels. 


WHAT YOU'LL NEED: 


  • Bachelor's degree preferred.


  • At least 5 years of News Reporting experience in top 30 market. 


WHAT YOU'LL NEED:


  • Must demonstrate strong news judgment and organizational skills.


  • Must connect on camera with a sense of urgency.


  • Ability to cultivate sources and mine stories.


  • Must have keen sense of logistics and ability to work well under intense pressure and deadlines.


  • Must have good creative and editorial judgment. Mastery of journalistic ethics and libel law.


  • Must be able to speak clearly and concisely.


  • Must be able and willing to travel overnight for shoots. 


  • Must be able to travel outside the United States, if necessary. 


  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. 


  • Valid driver's license and good driving record required. In addition, proof of insurance and liability coverage may be required.
