Campus Police Officer (PT)

Patrol all college campus areas for prevention of crimes and mitigate risks, including securing buildings, checking for safety violations and crime in parking areas, parks, sidewalks, athletic fields and other areas on and immediately adjacent to campus property.


Maintain professionalism and courtesy in interacting with students, staff, public and local law enforcement officers.


Receive reports of medical emergencies, provide First Responder level first aid services, and call for advanced care if necessary.


Monitor weather conditions, surveillance cameras and alarm systems, investigate and report suspicious or unusual conditions. Assist in implementing emergency notifications, evacuation or sheltering plans.


Investigate criminal and safety complaints, interview complainants and witnesses and take immediate action to protect persons or reduce risk by issuing warnings, enforcing laws and making arrests.


Perform traffic control functions on college property, including issuance of traffic citations and investigation of traffic accidents, directing traffic and assisting with parking, and providing directions.


Secures crime scenes, mediates disputes, conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witness statements, apprehends suspects, and makes arrests.


Informs and works collaboratively with college students, faculty and staff on all issues and operations related to campus safety and security, and to address identified campus needs and concerns.


Provide courtesy services such as starting cars, unlocking vehicles, escorting lone pedestrians at night on request, and providing general college information.


Supervise, mentor and provide training to Campus Police Cadets on assigned shifts.


Report malfunctioning alarms, blocked or non-functioning exits, broken windows or doors, burned out lights, and other building features that may affect safety.


Maintain annual firearm range qualification and other required certifications.


Assist in staff development and/or community involvement in seminars and workshops related to crime prevention, security, safety, etc.


Initiate and complete necessary reports and records. Assist in preparing State and Federal mandated reports.


Perform other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications



High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in Criminal Justice or a related field from an accredited university or college preferred.


Three years of full-time policing experience with a recognized police agency or college campus law enforcement agency required.
Twenty-one years of age or older.


Ability to pass psychological and medical fitness for duty exam before hiring, and maintain physical and psychological fitness through on-going medical or psychological evaluation as deemed necessary by the Campus Police Chief or the Office of Human Resources.


Ability to be certified in First Responder First Aid/CPR/AED.


Currently certified as an Illinois Police Officer with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standard Board requirements or the demonstrated ability to obtain Illinois police officer certification within three months of appointment.


Valid Illinois driver's license and acceptable driving record required.


Ability to pass a background investigation covering employment, education, driving, and criminal records.


Ability to read or interpret all types of documents including safety rules, regulations and procedure manuals.


Microsoft Office computer skills required. E-mail and Internet competency necessary. Proficiency in police software systems. Ability to become proficient in required departmental software.


Ability to speak clearly and effectively with individuals or to groups.


Ability to clearly convey thoughts and instructions to others both verbally and in writing. Ability to speak, read, write and comprehend Spanish is a plus.


Ability to work weekends and nights and occasional on-call hours.
