Position Overview

Coordinates and supervises quarry operations to ensure an adequate amount of raw material from the quarry is available to meet plant production needs. Closely monitors the daily activities of quarry workers. Uses independent judgement in performing responsibilities. Works under general supervision with specified policies, practices and objectives. Refers questionable items to supervisor for clarification. Exercises supervision over 25 to 28 hourly employees working in the quarry.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)


  • Establishes, communicates and assigns job responsibilities, goals and performance standards for employees within supervisory responsibility. Evaluates job performance.

  • Supervises and monitors hauling operations to prepare particular types of rock for crushing. Also supervises drilling, blasting and/or land stripping operations where applicable.

  • Ensures that all quarry activities are properly conducted and comply with all safety standards and regulations.

  • Conducts and/or participates in quarry department safety meetings and safety inspections of work areas.

  • Monitors production needs to make sure enough rock is available and ready for use in the manufacturing process.

  • When explosives are used in quarry operations, ensures that an appropriate amount of explosives is available for use.

  • Maintains specified records of quarry and mining activities.

  • Prepares reports and other specified paperwork as requested by management.

  • Inspects work sites to make sure proper clean up procedures have been executed.

  • Cooperates with other department managers in coordinating production operations with the quarry operations to supply the needed amount of raw materials from the quarry.

  • Assists as needed in planning long term quarry development goals including mine exploration.

  • Assists with the preparation of annual budgets and specifications on purchased equipment. Coordinates purchased material with plant needs.

  • Maintains awareness of current industry trends and practices by reading trade and industry magazines.

  • Schedules repairs and other maintenance with the maintenance department as needed. Orders and obtains parts and equipment as needed.



Other Requirements


  • Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrates excellent judgment and decision making skills

  • Knowledge of quarry operations including the use of quarry equipment and proper procedures for using explosives in a safe and effective manner.

  • Knowledge of MSHA safety regulations as well as state and federal mining laws.

  • Ability to drive multiple projects to successful completion

  • Ability to lead/manage others

  • Work requires walking over rough, uneven and rocky surfaces, bending and climbing ladders.

Experience

  • 3 or more years of experience in mining/quarrying operations with at least 2 years of supervisory experience.

Education

  • Associate's Degree of technical school preferred
