Automation and Continuous Improvement Engineer




DESCRIPTION:


Directly responsible for leading and managing the work of the automation team including safety, quality, cost, efficiency, training, and environmental compliance. Directly responsible for managing all aspects of engineering projects that provide support and assistance to the manufacturing process/production methods and control operations. Plans include the development and implementation of plans for highly complex and financially significant process/production improvement and maintenance projects for manufacturing operations at a plant. Ensures that all production/process methods and controls meet regional quality and cost efficiency standards. Supports creation, administration and deployment of learning opportunities and analytical method training that are driven by the strategic performance needs of the plant and technical and analytical training needs.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Hire, manage, coach and develop a high performing automation team that meets agreed objectives, delivers best practice results, adds value and pursues continuous improvements
  • Authority for all engineering software licenses, installation packages, support contracts, authorized users, or any other area related to any automation, control, or HMI devices.
  • Authority over all hardware associated with the current automation, controls, and HMI systems. This includes HMI PCs and their accessibility by anyone other than a "normal operator".
  • Authority for approving/disapproving of any automation or control changes due to enhancements, expansions, or projects performed by anyone, including internal employees, contractors, consultants, vendors, integrators, etc. This do NOT include emergency edits to maintain/restore production.
  • Authority as to who has access to/possession of any PLC, HMI, and drives engineering software.
  • Authority as to who can access the T-Shoot PC in the control room for making PLC program changes.
  • Authority to implement policies and procedures as conditions warrant to foster a disciplined and effective management of change program for automation and controls equipment.
  • Authority to manage scheduling of automation technicians based on workload, work order backlogs, on-call schedules, etc.
  • Manages the development, assessment and implementation of techniques and equipment of high complexity used in production process to maximize the efficiency of the operations.
  • Provides plans, projects and design systems at a plant level that increase productivity by improving the integration process/production methods
  • Researches recommendations and implements highly complex more efficient and safer manufacturing production/processes using new, existing or modified machinery, equipment or systems for plant or plants.
  • Manages the research, recommendations and implementation of production/process methods changes to work methods, materials, machinery, manpower allocation and safety measures for projects of highly complexity and financial significance at a plant or multiple plants.
  • Develops work standards, schedules, procedures and performance standards for work applications to improve efficiency and cost reductions using standard company approved standards.
  • Manages the analyses and recommended changes to production/process standards to improve efficiency of work operations.
  • Designs, Develops, and implements cross-functional training in projects, systems, applications, for plant level engineering and maintenance staff.
  • Ensures all tracking of on the job training and related training is current.
  • Analyzes feedback and performance data to measure, identify, and eliminate performance gaps in delivered training for programs.
  • Recommends the most appropriate means of delivering training to employees including online, classroom, and Instructor led training.
  • Consults with plant leadership, human resources, and plant manufacturing personnel on a regularly scheduled basis to ensure compliance of programs.
  • Stay current on best practices within the learning industry and the apprenticeship models by researching trends, attending relevant meetings and conferences.
  • Provides internal consulting services including for new/ modified process/production applications, software, systems, etc.
  • The primary Interface and liaise with internal operations staff and external vendors/ suppliers on operational issues, problems or projects at a plant or plants wide levels.
  • Prepares test reports, system documents and/or closing reports from assigned engineering projects of high complexity.
  • Identifies and executes complex cost savings, productivity improvement, and capital projects with limited supervision.
  • Provides after-hours support during plant downtime escalation as well as during on-call rotation.



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS degree in electrical engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or other relevant field, OR significant experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment. Six Sigma Black Belt Certification desirable.
  • Certification in electronics, automation and controls or Maintenance preferred.
  • Previous experience working with complex engineering projects and a minimum of 5 years developing and delivering technical training.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in system software, PC proficiency - Access, Excel, Word and MS Project and other databases.
  • Demonstrated lead project experience in projects with significant complexity and financial impact.

  • Self-starter, technical aptitude, strong mathematical, analytical skills
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Must be able to walk long distances, climb on machinery and stand for long periods of time.
  • Bending, crouching and stooping may be required. Must also be able to work in non-climate-controlled facilities.
  • Work environment includes a noisy, high traffic manufacturing production floor
