Job Description:

SUMMARY/JOB PURPOSE:

Discovery Biotherapeutics is seeking an experienced, self-motivated Principal Scientist to provide cell biology and translational support for the advancement of immune-oncology (I-O) bispecific and immunocytokine portfolio at Exelixis. The successful candidate must have strong immunology and in vitro cell biology background as he/she will lead in vitro and ex vivo assay development and early translational activities for bispecific and immunocytokine programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Project lead and contribute actively to bispecific and immunocytokine pipeline development from discovery to lead selection

  • Design, implement and manage in vitro mechanism of action validation assays in support of bispecific and immunocytokine programs (e.g., cytotoxicity assays, immunological assays, ELISA, FACS etc.)

  • Design, implement and manage biomarker and tissue staining for translational characterization of disease-related targets enabling earlier decision for programs

  • Critical scientific/technical data analysis, interpretation of experiments and report writing.

  • Effectively and timely communicate scientific concepts, findings and interpretation to multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Interacts and collaborates with internal departments and external collaborators to deliver quality and timely findings in support of drug candidate advancement.

  • Follows company intellectual property and compliance policies and practices.

  • Complies with company health and safety policies and general laboratory practices.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervises, hires, trains, provides work direction, and problem-solving assistance for Scientist(s).

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in Immunology, Cancer Biology or a closely related field and a minimum of eighteen years of related experience; or

• Master's degree in Immunology, Cancer Biology or a closely related field and a minimum of sixteen years of related experience; or


  • Ph.D. in Immunology, Cancer Biology or a closely related field and a minimum of six years of experience and/or training in biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry post Ph.D.

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

• I-O experience in biologics-based drug development in biotechnology/pharmaceutical setting is essential.


  • Extensive experience in setting up MOA-based cell-based validation assays a must.

  • Strong CRO management experience for out-sourcing of in vitro and translational experiments a must.

Knowledge/Skills:


  • Proficiency in immunology-based in vitro and translational assays.

  • Strong scientific understanding of in vitro and translational characterization of biologics (bispecifics and immunocytokines a plus) from discovery to lead selection is essential.

  • Demonstrated drive for rigorous scientific excellence. Ability to think critically and creatively to identify and solve scientific problems.

  • Ability to work independently, excellent time management and organization skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.

  • A strong team player.

  • Skillful in mammalian cell culture and related techniques.

  • Good knowledge in Flow cytometry and histology.

  • Advanced knowledge in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, PDF, Graphpad prism.

  • Good tracking record and report writing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Environment: primarily working in laboratories and/or in office

• Exposures encountered, such as hazardous materials, extreme cold.

• Minimum travel required (10%)
