The EH&S Manager ensures facility compliance with EH&S regulations, guidelines, procedures, and industry standards. This individual promotes a safe working environment for all Exelixis personnel. He or she develops and supports safety and environmental management systems, programs, and policies in addition to coordinating, leading, facilitating and maintaining responsibility for Contractor Safety, record keeping and other programs that impact worker safety and environmental stewardship. Responsibilities also include supporting Business Continuity and Emergency Response programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide technical expertise and support in the area of occupational safety to promote individual behavior-based safety programs and ensure workers maintain vigilance regarding all safety concerns
Develop, review, and revise EH&S guidelines and procedures to ensure that they are established, current, accurate, compliant, and effectively communicated
Support the development of safety standards and guidelines for engineering projects
Review capital projects for compliance with all safety and environmental requirements
Conduct chemical assessments for new materials coming on-site
Train employees and monitor their compliance with chemical hygiene plans and procedures
Provide training on company and regulatory technical safety and environmental requirements
Manage site safety and environmental programs such as line breaking, lock out/tag out, contractor safety, water and energy use minimization, waste management, confined spaces, and management of change
Prepare safety reports for corporate as well as external regulatory agencies such as California OSHA
Participate in safety and environmental compliance initiatives to ensure that the company is prepared for regulatory audits and inspections at all times. May interface with regulatory authorities during audits and inspections
Inspect, maintain and coordinate all activities related to site-wide safety equipment including safety audits
Support Emergency Response and Crisis Management in addressing environmental incidents and remediation
Conduct Risk Assessments (PHA, Haz Ops, What If's) and Job Hazard Analysis for existing and new processes
Support investigations for all incidents and accidents on site and ensure timely completion of corrective actions
Oversee and update incident reporting and investigation system based on effective cause/effect analysis with involvement and empowerment of frontline employees to change culture from reactive to preventive and ultimately predictive
Participate in cross-functional safety committees and safety focused project meetings
Management of multiple EH&S related consultants and service vendors
Lead the company Emergency Evacuation Team
Capture day to day modification of chemical inventory and work regularly with lab owners to ensure compliance to chemical management plan
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises staff, including scheduling and assigning work, reviewing performance, and
recommends salary increases, promotions, transfers, demotions, or terminations.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Education:
• Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, environmental/health sciences, industrial hygiene or related field and seven years of related experience; or
• Master's degree in occupational safety, environmental/health sciences, industrial hygiene or related field and one year of related experience; or
• Equivalent combination of education and experience.
May require certification in specialized areas
Experience/The Ideal Candidate will have:
At least 7 years' experience in safety, environmental or related field or Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) with at least5 years' experience in a biopharmaceutical research environment
Knowledge/Skills:
Demonstrated technical knowledge of biopharmaceutical research and processing desired
Knowledge of DOT regulations as well as Federal and California OSHA, ANSI, NFPA and EPA standards and interpretation
Leadership ability, results oriented, able to manage conflict and assume responsibility
Must possess excellent written and oral communications skills to communicate with regulatory authorities and respond to inquiries in an effective manner
Must exercise rapid learning ability, attention to detail, excellent computer skills, team player, organized analytical thinker with a high level of energy and self-motivation, excellent writing skills
Ability to read, develop, and understand procedures and other controlled documents
Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing
Knowledge and understanding of various software packages, specifically Microsoft Office suite
HAZWOPR 40-hr certificate preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Environment: primarily working indoors and outdoors of buildings, performing clerical work
• Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, or typing.
• Physical effort/lifting medium - up to 50 pounds
• Emergency staff designations
o Though not currently required, there may be occasion by exception for working weekends, nights, or on-call as a regular part of the job
• Travel not required
