Overview:


The Assistant Scenic Charge Artist assists with the day to day managing of the paint staff and the flow of scenery between shops and theaters. They participate in painting, shop maintenance, and assist in teaching the scenic art apprentices in both technique and good work habits.


Responsibilities:



  • Works with Scenic Charge Artist to determine and execute daily work schedule, work flow, management of the shop floor, and the assignment of tasks.

  • Participates in communication with other shops to coordinate flow of scenery and props in and out of the workspace and performance spaces.

  • Participates in all painting of scenery, props, and performance space maintenance as necessary.

  • Acts as lead scenic on several productions each season.

  • Monitors the quality of the finished product on all productions.

  • Monitors the maintenance of the shop and works with apprentices to keep it clean and tidy.

  • Keeps abreast of communication with designers and other shops.

  • Assists the Scenic Charge Artist with estimating productions and creating samples.

  • Attends weekly staff meetings and production meetings when necessary.

  • Attends rehearsals when necessary

  • Takes lead on weekly payroll and paperwork with new hires.

  • Tracks inventory, informing the Scenic Charge Artist of needed supplies.

  • Assists with the training and evaluation of scenic apprentices.

  • Assists with purchasing and budget paperwork as needed.


Qualifications and Skills:

Required:



  • Three years experience as a scenic artist in a professional setting.

  • Three years experience working in theater.

  • Computer literacy, specifically in Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Ability to multi-task, and maintain a professional demeanor at all times.

  • Strong verbal communication skills.

  • The ability to work as a team player.


Preferred:



  • Theatrical Degree or in Drama, Theater Design, or Theater Production – or – a Certificate in Scenic Art.

  • Previous experience working with young scenic artists

  • Experience in summer stock and commercial shops
