Summary

The Welder is responsible for shaping, assembling and modifying pieces of metal or repairing damage in metal components using appropriate equipment that emits high heat, meting the metal into shape, to put together mechanical structures or parts with a great deal of precision. The Welder must be competent in using potentially dangerous equipment following all safety precautions. Carefully inspect work for imperfections and defects to ensure the structural integrity of parts/projects. The Welder also assists in mechanical engine repairs.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities


  • Set up welding machines and perform a full variety of welding operations using GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW, consumable electrode with inert gas, automatic consumable electrode with inert gas, arc welding, and propylene cutting on a wide variety of components.

  • Brazing, Carbon arc gouging and Plasma burning operations

  • Fit to assemble parts to facilitate welding using standard welding and assembly practices

  • Ability to perform all associated chipping grinding operations as required

  • Ability to perform identified Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) activities as required

  • Plans, lays out and assembles work with or without the use of jigs or fixtures as required

  • Selects the tools and equipment required for the job

  • Selects the filler metal and variables required and perform standard welding procedures to control expansion, shrinkage, and distortion

  • Determines size and type of weld when such information is not furnished

  • Performs both set-up and weld complete on job as directed

  • May perform other related duties as directed, works to tolerances of 1/64"

  • Perform weld operations on carbon and stainless material

  • Ability to write technical reports including specific work-related tasks performed

  • Independently troubleshoot and recommend appropriate customer solutions

  • Work on mechanical engine repairs when slow down of or no welding jobs

  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications and Educational Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • 3 years' experience in Welding

  • from a technical school for Welding (American Welding Society certification preferred)

  • Preferred G4 welding certification

  • Working knowledge of all welding shop practices as well as electrical/electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulics applications

  • Knowledge of machine shop practices including drilling, reaming, tapping, Bridgeport, and small lathe turning operations Ability to read and understand blueprints and follow written welding procedures

  • Knowledge of MIL-STD-2035 Non-destructive Testing preferred

  • Demonstrable ability to become certified to weld in all established bronze procedures, as well as the following areas; steel & bronze structural welding, P-1 pipe, tubing, steel forging, NiAlBrz on steel preferred

  • Ability to operate and safely use overhead cranes and jib cranes along with material handling equipment, such as fork trucks, stackers, and pallet handling equipment preferred

  • Ability to use micrometers and other measuring devices

  • Maintain valid driver's license and qualify for company credit card

  • Ability to travel (up to 75%) including weekends, evenings, and holidays and in emergency situations travel on short notice

  • Eligible to obtain and maintain security clearance, which requires USA Citizenship

  • This position requires access or potential access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information, which is Not Releasable to Foreign Nationals (NOFORN) data. Therefore, to meet NOFORN requirement, you will have to provide proof of US Citizenship and attest that you do not have dual citizenship. Acceptable proof of US Citizenship is a US Passport, US Birth Certificate or Naturalization Certificate.


Physical Requirements

While performing duties of the above jobs, the associate is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or other components; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear and smell. The Welder is frequently is required to sit and climb or balance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must have the ability to regularly lift at least 35 pounds.
