Job Description:

The Longmont, Colorado office is seeking a Senior or Associate Civil Engineer who specializes in hydraulics and hydrology (H&H), and has practical experience applying their skills in the design and construction of hydraulic structures.  We are looking for experienced, motivated candidates with attention to detail, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of and provide leadership to a strong multi-disciplinary team. 


The Longmont office of Schnabel focuses on the evaluation and design of dams, reinforced concrete structures, and pumping facilities as well as advancing our practice of risk informed decision making within our dam engineering group. Example projects include design of water control, conveyance, pumping, measurement structures, towers, vaults and appurtenant steel and mechanical systems for municipal, industrial, and irrigation water supply.


Job Responsibilities:



  • Provide H&H engineering expertise, technical oversight and overall management of dam and water resource engineering projects. 

  • Collaborate with peers from other technical disciplines to achieve project goals, including geotechnical, civil, structural, and water rights engineers.

  • Prepare and review design calculations, hydraulic and hydrologic computer models, engineering reports, and construction drawings.

  • Manage client relationships.

  • Develop engineering proposals and qualification statements.

  • Perform project management activities including planning and delegating work, managing project budgets, invoicing, communicating resource needs, and reporting backlog.

  • Work as a team member within the Longmont office and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources.

  • Supervise and mentor junior engineers.


Required Skills/Experience:



  • A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Civil Engineering or other related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program. 

  • Licensed Professional Engineer and the ability to obtain reciprocity.

  • 8 to 15 years of relevant work experience in hydraulics and hydrology.

  • Open channel and closed conduit hydraulic design of infrastructure for water measurement, control, and conveyance. 

  • Proficiency with HEC-RAS (both 1-D and 2-D) and HEC-HMS computer programs.

  • Experience preparing and reviewing construction drawings.  

  • Experience and knowledge of applicable Colorado dam safety rules and guidelines, in particular those pertaining to H&H aspects of dam, spillway, and outlet works projects.

  • Prior project management experience

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • A strong work ethic and the desire to perform professionally at a high level.

  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Attention to detail and well-organized.


For candidates in Colorado the salary range is $90,000 to $125,000 commensurate with experience and expertise.
