Job Description:

We are looking for a talented Senior Emissions Compliance Engineer to join our Emissions Compliance and Certification Team in Columbus, IN / your remote home office. Our mission is to partner with our development teams worldwide to apply deep knowledge of internal combustion engine emissions and performance to improve our products and ensure performance in accordance with agency regulations. This role will have a meaningful and positive impact for our customers, our communities, and the environment. You can be a part of a dynamic team at a pivotal time in the industry as we incorporate exciting new technology to move towards zero emissions.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:


  • You will be a key member and Subject Matter Expert as a part of the Emissions Compliance and Certification team, guiding and advising product engineers in multiple regions on ensuring products meet and exceed local Regulatory requirements for the use of Auxiliary Emissions Control Devices, or AECDs.

  • This role provides decision making, assessment for discovery and approval for AECDs, while improving our inventory of content and consistency across platforms. You will play a significant role to ensure the underlying software design and tuning of AECDs meets the high expectations of emissions regulators around the globe … while still meeting the needs of our end-use Customers.

  • You will be a key part of driving meaningful discussions and collaboration with engineering team members, technical managers, project leaders, product, and manufacturing engineers across the company, as well as supplier partners to deliver information, guidance, and challenge conventional assumptions on product capabilities.

  • Utilizing the core competencies of combustion performance and thermal and fluid sciences, you will answer key questions about the performance and architecture of a system or component that leads to state of the art, highly effective, environmentally friendly, and competitive products.

  • You will have the opportunity for firsthand evaluation of complex emissions controls algorithms, including driving lessons learned into future product adoption. You will guide decisions about further analysis, design optimization, feasibility studies, or architecture definition to project teams.

  • You will be able to rapidly grow your knowledge of engine and aftertreatment system performance and emissions control technologies by having engagement with a wide portfolio of Cummins’ products, from small gensets to RAM pickups, large semi-trucks, all manner of off-highway equipment, and large displacements such as locomotives; and with multiple fuels, including diesel, natural gas, propane, gasoline as well as hydrogen-based fuels.

The successful candidate for this role will possess the following experience, knowledge, and a caring disposition:


  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines

  • A minimum of 3 years of on-the-job experience.

  • Experience with Engine Emission Controls or Aftertreatment Emissions Controls.

  • Strong communication and project management skills
