Responsible for providing fixture and tool designing service that supports timely new product introductions. The Fixture and Tool Designer must be capable of transforming information from ideas, sketches, product drawings, or models into workable devices in order to produce a product or system. The Designer will be responsible for developing tooling concepts and designs for all tools, dies, fixtures, and special equipment necessary to produce a product or system, with follow-up on build and implementation.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Design fixtures, dies, molds, cutting tools, equipment, and machine work envelope layouts. Initiate and manage tool design changes in CMS Issue purchase order requests for off-the-shelf tooling Initiate tool work orders for the build of tool designs Support the Zimmer tool fabrication shop or other outside vendors on the build of tool designs This is not an exhaustive list of duties or functions and might not necessarily comprise all of the essential functions for purposes of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Expected Areas of Competence


  • Must have working knowledge of tool and fixture design for the areas of machining (lathes, mills, CNC applications, perishable tooling applications) and finishing (polishing, mass finishing, blasting, electro polishing, etc.).

  • Must have working knowledge in control procedures, such as the Change Management System (CMS), and Deviation process, Zimmer Engineering Specifications (ZESs), Zimmer Laboratory Procedures (ZLPs), Zimmer Work Instructions (ZWIs), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Must have working knowledge of drafting standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

  • Demonstrate ownership of and ability to manage project assignments with a broad scope and high level of complexity and able to prioritize and complete work in a timely manner.

  • Must have the ability to effectively work within a team and cross functionally to expedite completion of critical project tasks.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

Education/Experience Requirements


  • Candidates should have an Associates Degree in an engineering science plus 5 years experience in fixture and tool design, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must have 3 years Unigraphics experience with version 8.5 or higher.

Travel Requirements

Up to 5%
