Combustion and Emissions Engineering Manager at Cummins

Job Description:

We are looking for a talented Engineering Manager to join our team specializing in Combustion and Emissions for our Engine Business Segment in Columbus IN.

This applied science/product systems focused leadership position utilizes the core competencies of thermal and fluid sciences in the specialized areas of combustion and emissions science; using and advancing analytical and experimental approaches to answer key questions about the performance and architecture of a system or component. This drives decisions and creates technical content which ultimately leads to state-of-the-art, highly effective, environmentally friendly, and competitive products.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:


  • Will lead current product combustion, performance, and emissions work for heavy duty natural gas automotive engines:  B6.7N, L9N and ISX12N.   Will include responsibility for resource planning for 2+ direct reports. 

  • Role includes opportunities for emissions testing/development, emissions audit test support, field issue troubleshooting, calibration improvement, high warranty part investigations, some vehicle testing, etc.  Also includes Carb 2024 emissions development/validation/certification.    Includes support for products certified to US and European emissions regulations   

  • Applies Principles of Combustion and Emissions Science - Interprets and predicts the performance of combustion systems by leveraging a quantitative and intuitive comprehension of the conversion of chemical energy to heat by reacting a fuel with an oxidizer, the formation of exhaust pollutants, modeling tools, controls, and experimental tools to answer key questions about the system or component

  • Product Problem Solving - Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic root causes and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.

  • Manages complexity - Making sense of complex, high quantity, and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.

  • Cultivates innovation - Creating new and better ways for the organization to be successful.

  • Obtains input and negotiates with stakeholders

  • Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of medium-term project direction, such as setting team goals, conducting analysis, testing, and communication with stakeholders.

  • Applies processes such as Value Package Introduction (VPI), Value Package Change (VPC), Engineering Standard Work, (ESW), Functional Excellence Practice (FEP) and tools related to thermal and fluid sciences such as GT-Power, Fluent, Converge, Concerto, Cummins Data Analysis Tool (CDAT), test data calculation, test data storage, Electronic Control Module (ECM) calibration tool, and Emissions data system

  • Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s)

  • Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams

  • Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:


  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required.

  • Previous managerial or lead experience is preferred

  • Previous Matlab experience is a plus

  • Emission development experience preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience

Base salary rate commensurate with experience.
