Job Description:

The Senior Product Engineer will specify product function and performance requirements to meet customer expectations and establish all functional requirements for purchasing, construction, testing and application of finished product and components. Apply innovation, creativity and vision to the development and analysis of railcar suspension, braking, coupling and other components and systems for the global railway market while embracing leading edge and digital technologies.

• Ensure all design engineering is complete and meets quality, manufacturing and industry standards as well as performance requirements
• Interface with customer’s technical personnel to determine customer requirements and ensure proper application of products
• Plan and manage project schedules within budget guidelines
• Determine customer and Industry needs for product function and performance
• Conduct design reviews with Manufacturing, Quality and Purchasing to ensure all requirements are specified and manufacturing process for products is optimized
• Develop testing requirements and coordinate testing needs and schedules with supervisor of testing facility and applicable observers
• Maintain knowledge of applicable technologies and developments to be applied to existing and new products
• Perform design analyses and works with Manufacturing and Purchasing to cost reduce new and existing products while ensuring product requirements are met
• Create and update product specifications; evaluate incoming specifications to determine product configuration and support proposal activity
• Create product function and performance requirements for design and development; ensure quality plan meets product requirements

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
• 4 Year College degree or equivalent Technical Training; Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
• 10 years hands on experience in a similar position or discipline, or advanced engineering degree (both preferred)
• 10 years’ experience and/or training in material and manufacturing processes necessary for product design, CAD and design layout
• Ability to perform computer modeling and simulation, solid modeling and Finite Element analysis, product prototyping and testing
• Knowledge of application of product devices in customers’ railcar applications, AAR specifications and Industry requirements

• Selection, design and ordering of parts and material; scheduling testing
• Disposition of non-conforming material
• Developing and approving new product designs
• Determination of more cost- effective designs
• Corrective action of manufacturing or supplier problems
• Selection of manufacturing methods and suppliers
