Chemical Process Engineer

The Plant Support Chemical Engineer will provide continuous improvement for Safety, Cost, Quality and Reliability of production lines to increase the plant efficiencies as well as day-to-day plant support and troubleshooting. Work in close collaboration with operations, process technology transfer, and planning/procurement teams to achieve these improvements.

This position requires a high degree of technical skill level and chemical background. Participation in all aspects of process support will be required: new process implementation; value improvement optimization; safety evaluation; in-depth troubleshooting; formal Corrective Action Preventative Action (CAPA) evaluation and implementation; and process control planning. The Process Engineering team works with an extremely varied chemical portfolio including: speciality organic chemicals; organic resins and adhesives; polymer materials; inorganic glasses, minerals, and composites; and pharmaceuticals. Production scale is small to moderate, allowing for rapid product introduction and frequent innovation. Work will be performed within an FDA/ISO regulated facility requiring the development and execution of appropriate validation/qualification protocols.

The Plant Support Process Engineering team is responsible for the efficient operation of all chemical products in two manufacturing plants. We evaluate existing manufacturing operations; establish procedures to gain optimum utilization of equipment; review production requirements; and recommend process improvements.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Provide process engineering, chemical/chemistry support and detailed know-how to manufacturing personnel.
  • Provide and develop training for manufacturing personnel. Develops SOP's, work instructions, and other quick reference material as needed.
  • Build effective working relationships throughout the site, interact with shop floor supervisors, associates, and plant management to meet objectives.
  • Determine source of variation in production of products and develop systems or procedures required to reduce or eliminate variation.
  • Investigate causes of non-conforming product and implement corrective action.
  • Conducts root causes analysis to address specific process or quality problems.
  • Investigate and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs) to meet business and compliance requirements.
  • Develop Value Stream Maps or Process Maps to identify improvement opportunities for Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost
  • Apply a wide range of Lean, Six Sigma methods and tools to develop and implement process improvements
  • Initiate, develop and execute validation/qualification protocols to support business/operational initiatives including customer backorder minimization, cost reduction, non-conformance reduction, complaint reduction, yield/process reliability improvement, and FDA/ISO compliance requirements.
  • Understand plant environmental health and safety regulations and comply with all applicable laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Some travel may be required (<10%)

Education and Experience:


  • Position requires a four-year degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • 2-5 years of chemical process engineering experience is required.
  • Prior experience in medical device, chemical or pharmaceutical industry preferred.
  • Prior experience in an active plant support/operational chemical process engineering role highly preferred.
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt with demonstrated successes desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Strong Value Stream Mapping and process analysis skills
  • Familiar with Structured problem solving (DMAIC, PDCA, etc) to effectively lead problem investigation and resolution
  • Understands manufacturing metrics as they align to Process Improvement initiatives
  • Able to use statistical analysis software in Excel, Minitab
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Good written and verbal communication, as well as solid presentation and facilitation skills
