Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY (What is done and why)

The Systems Administrator monitors and maintains complex system environments, both hardware and software to meet business needs.  This position is responsible for current installed systems in all phases of support, capacity, performance, availability, security, and application performance analysis.  The Systems Administrator will rely on experience and judgement to successfully complete work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, IN PRIORITY ORDER (Majority of duties, but not meant to be all inclusive or prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary)


  1. Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and support multiple systems, servers, operating systems, applications, and WAN/LAN technologies in a physical, virtual, and cloud-based environment.  Incorporate security requirements as directed by the VP of Information Security. Time: 25%

  2. Monitor system performance using appropriate tools to collect system health statistics, acknowledge alarm notifications.  Collaborate with senior staff and Information Technology management to proactively address any current or potential future issues. Time: 20%

  3. Serve as Tier II technical support for server, network, and desktop related issues passed from the Service Desk. Time: 20%

  4. Serve on technical projects assigned and within the Administrator’s area of responsibility. Participate on cross-functional teams as assigned.  Time: 15%

  5. Develop standard operating procedures.  Provide structured and unstructured technical training to provide growth opportunities and support succession planning. Time: 10%

  6. Perform updating and patching using automated processes. Time: 5%

  7. Administer and maintain end user accounts, permissions, and access rights for network access, email, and other systems. Time: 5%

EDUCATION (Minimum education required to perform the duties of this position)


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or 3 years of related work experience required.

EXPERIENCE (Minimum experience required to perform the duties of this position)

In addition to the education requirement:


  • Three or more years of experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting server and networking environments or enterprise application environments required.

  • One industry leading certification such as Network+, Security+, Server+, MTA, CCENT, etc. required.

  • One advanced certification (MCSA, MCSA, CCNA, CCNP, etc.) or industry recognized project management certification preferred (PMP, CAPM, Project+).

  • Should have relevant and practical experience with supporting small to mid-sized organizations with at least one of the following technologies: Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), VMWare (server and Desktop Virtualization), Microsoft Server Technologies (AD, DNS, DHCP), automated scheduling tools (OpCon, Automic).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (Minimum technical and communication skill levels and licenses/certificates normally required to perform the duties of this position)


  • Must have demonstrated practical knowledge of specific Microsoft technologies including but not limited to servers, workstations, Active Directory (domains, trusts, and GPO).

  • Must have demonstrated practical knowledge of network protocols and services including but not limited to HTTP, SSL, FTP, VPN, TCP/IP, DHCP, SNMP, SMB, SMTP, and NetBIOS.

  • Should have working knowledge of networking equipment and technologies including but not limited to routers, switches, gateways, and firewalls.

  • Must have   understanding of workflow automation and the ability to translate business processes into automated workflows using standard industry tools.

  • Experience with scripting skills (VBScript, PowerShell) for automating administrative and routine tasks is preferred.

  • Must be able to effectively learn diverse technology and business systems and complex processes and apply that knowledge to better serve the organization.

  • Must have demonstrated communication skills and an effective, positive approach to staff relationships.  The ability to forge strong working partnerships within the organization as well as with strategic partners and vendors.

  • Must possess a moderate degree of technical expertise in the software and hardware facilities commonly used in the organization.

  • Ability to work with others on difficult technology problems, organize appropriate logic-based resolution paths, and ensure full resolution including customer satisfaction.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS (Physical effort generally associated with this position)

Work involves standing and walking for brief periods of time, but most work is done from a seated position. There is potential for eyestrain from prolonged work at the computer. Individual must be able to travel to complete applicable assignments, projects and training. Deadlines, workloads and pressure to achieve goals may cause increased stress levels. Occasionally may be required to lift 50- 100 pounds. Individual must be capable of maneuvering under and around office furniture.

WORKING CONDITIONS (Typical working conditions associated with this type of work and environmental hazards, if any, that may be encountered in performing the duties of this position)

Internal- Work is normally performed in climate- controlled office environment, where exposure to conditions of extreme heat/cold, poor ventilation, fumes and gases is very limited. Noise level is moderate and includes sounds of normal office equipment (computers, telephones, etc.). No known environmental hazards are encountered in normal performance of duties. Length of day is unpredictable; long hours may be required to accommodate deadlines or special meetings. Ability to periodically work evening and weekend hours as needed to minimize project impacts to members.  Ability to be part of an on-call rotation for the team consisting of evening and weekend hours.

External- Some travel is required; however, information on environmental conditions is not available.
