The role you’ll contribute:

The Clinical Educator for Perioperative Services provides a combination of education, staff development and leadership while promoting evidence-based clinical practice for the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases of surgery.  The educator creates and delivers a variety of education curriculum and coordinates all perioperative educational opportunities; is responsible for new employee orientation; evaluation of staff competencies; implementation of new policies and procedures as needed; organizing unit in-services; ORNIP and working collaboratively with the Nurse Managers and Director.  This individual works both independently and with direction of the Nurse Manager and Director to assess each unit’s learning needs and participates in the development of unit based education plans that exceed standards.  The educator demonstrates the ability to empower and support employees to be experts in their fields, and establishes positive partnerships with staff and physicians to meet mutual goals and create an overall exceptional patient experience.

  • Provides didactic, lab, clinical training, instruction and functional education for all of Surgical Services. 

  • Develops, implements and evaluates orientation for new employees; coordinates, assigns, monitors clinical rotations of orientees. 
  • Supervises and Monitors Preceptor activities.
  • Provides continuing education and in-services determines by the needs of the staff/facility. 
  • Coordinates preparation and implementation of department specific Net Learning.
  • Acts as a resource for staff educational opportunities.
  • Guides, directs, supervises and involves staff in developing educational programs.
  • Coordinates clinical rotations for school affiliations in healthcare programs.
  • Services as Liaison with pharmaceutical and product reps to provide ongoing education in new drugs and technology. 
  • Demonstrates commitment to all department and corporate compliance policies. 
  • Assists with special projects as needed or directed.
  • Assists with Annual Competencies of all Surgical Services to include Endoscopy, PAT, OPS, Pre-Op, PACU and Operating Room.
  • Participates in Department Quality Improvement processes. 
  • Provides back-up for NSQUIP (National Surgical Quality Improvement Program) abstraction.
  • Assists with patient care in the perioperative departments as needed. (Scrub or circulate as needed)
  • Maintains knowledge of current perioperative nursing practices as recommended by AORN, ASPAN
  • Keeps abreast of trends within specialty as well as changes in technology
  • Selects current literature and communicates information relevant to service
  • Designs or participates in educational methodologies to facilitate unit compliance.  Facilitates education for the perioperative staff to promote advanced clinical practice.
  • Collaborates with department managers, clinical leads, and Education Department to maintain the system for tracking education and ongoing competency documentation.
  • Coordinates scheduling of equipment for use in education events.
  • Facilitates the orientation of new employees and provides orientation to current staff in given areas as needed.
  • Develops implements and monitors special educational projects as assigned by the managers.
  • Provides and/or coordinates ongoing in-services for the perioperative staff
  • Promotes a unit environment that encourages retention, development of staff, customer service, and family-centered care
  • Motivates and influences staff to improve clinical practice through excellent interpersonal skills
  • Maintains communication with department managers and clinical leaders to stay current on clinical changes that may have an impact on educational needs
  • Assists in the development and implements educational programs to keep clinical staff current on required competencies

 

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:        

3 years OR Experience required

Must be proficient in the English Language

Computer literacy in Word/PowerPoint, Excel required

Standards of AORN, ASPAN, AAMI

Knowledge of accreditation requirements, TJC, HFAP, etc required

Bachelor of Science in Nursing, enrolled in a Master’s of Science of Nursing program required

Current North Carolina RN License required

BLS and ACLS certifications required
