WATER PRACTICE

Michael Baker International's Water Group provides innovative consulting, planning and engineering solutions for the entire spectrum of the water cycle. We have proven experience in providing a full range of professional services from scientific and technical analysis, concept through design, and construction support services. Protection and management of water resources starts at the watershed level and follows the movement of water through urban and agricultural areas, streams, lakes and reservoirs, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and water/wastewater treatment plants.

DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking a Technical Writer to join our team as an integral member of the Emergency Management and Response group of the Alexandria, Virginia office. You will primarily support the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in their core mission. This includes support for FEMA's collaboration with state, local, and tribal entities to increase the public's risk awareness and drive action to reduce risk. The position may also support other clients throughout the nation.

Responsibilities include:


  • Researching, reviewing, drafting, editing, fact checking, and formatting a variety of documents according to specific requirements, and sharing expertise with other members of a larger, multi-company team.
  • Collaborating with team members and providing customer service to our clients and other partners via phone, chat, and email.
  • Formatting and editing white papers, engineering letters, detailed engineering studies, and contractual deliverables for federal and local clients.
  • Satisfying project requirements by ensuring the team follows established business processes and the products meet quality standards and deadlines. Assessing processes for improvements.
  • Developing excellent materials, keeping track of multiple projects, learning new ways of doing things, and mentoring others.
  • Working with senior managers to produce monthly reports of departmental accomplishments and cost variances.
  • Gathering, consolidating, and analyzing information on a variety of projects to inform high-visibility, short-notice deliverables.
  • Maintains familiarity with various widely used style/format guides and advises clients and team on the appropriate situations for using a particular guide

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communication, or another writing-related area of study; 0 to 2 years of related work experience.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, able to obtain a Public Trust badge with the federal government.
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and verbal.
  • The ability to communicate and work successfully with our internal associates and external clients.
  • Advanced knowledge of formatting Microsoft Office documents is required.
  • Although attention to detail is critical, the job also requires mental flexibility and the ability to adapt to frequent process changes.
  • In this job, you will learn new skills and grow in those you have, to better prepare you for future endeavors.
  • Knowledge of the National Flood Insurance Program or experience in working with FEMA's flood mapping program is preferred.

PREFERRED

  • Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
  • Experience with the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and FEMA's Risk Mapping Assessment and Planning (MAP) Program

COMPENSATION

The salary range for this position is $42,348-$105,825.
