WATER PRACTICE

Michael Baker International's Water Group provides innovative consulting, planning and engineering solutions for the entire spectrum of the water cycle. We have proven experience in providing a full range of professional services from scientific and technical analysis, concept through design, and construction support services. Protection and management of water resources starts at the watershed level and follows the movement of water through urban and agricultural areas, streams, lakes and reservoirs, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and water/wastewater treatment plants.

DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking a Civil Associate with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) experience to join our team. As an integral member of our Emergency Management and Response (EMR) team in the Alexandria, Virginia office, the Civil Associate will assist Project Engineers with tasks appropriate for a junior engineer, including data review, site review, field documentation, data collection, data organization, data analysis, civil engineering planning and design. The position will support contracts with the FEMA, including FEMA Headquarters and FEMA Regions 1, 2, 3, and/or 5 and other contracts for local clients as needs arise. RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Support of riverine hydrologic and hydraulic modeling projects as part of FEMA's Risk Mapping, Assessment, and Planning (Risk MAP) Program
  • Support complex urban/pluvial and riverine floodplain studies
  • Execute one dimensional and two-dimensional flood risk modeling software applications such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, FLO-2D, and SWIMM
  • Support the collection and analysis of data used to support hydrologic and hydraulic modeling.
  • Support the preparation of floodplain and watershed studies in compliance with FEMA standards and specifications and assist with Quality Assurance and Quality Control for flood insurance study deliverables
  • Support GIS specialists with various planning and water resources, flood risk management and environmental restoration projects.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • 2-4 years related experience in surface water or related field.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineer, or equivalent work experience.
  • Fundamental understanding of hydrology and hydraulics.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
  • Customer service and solution-oriented attitude; able to represent the company in a positive manner with internal and external clients
  • Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
  • Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

PREFERRED

  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)
  • Basic knowledge of industry standard computer software for the position (examples include software such as ArcMap, and Hydrologic/Hydraulic models like HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS)
  • Experience preparing engineering related calculations and analyses, analyze data in spreadsheets and programming tools, and prepare visual aids
  • Experience preparing plans and specifications for storm water design and stream channel restoration design projects
  • Experience in 2D and unsteady H&H modeling
  • Basic familiarity with coding languages (e.g., R, python, SQL, VBA) and a desire to learn/develop them
  • Working knowledge of GitHub and Jupyter platforms

COMPENSATION
The salary range for this position is $56,886 - $118,527.
