Bridge Inspector II at Genesee and Wyoming Railroad

Job Description:

SUMMARY:


This position is responsible for the scheduling, inspecting, recording and reporting of the assigned structures to ensure the safety of G&W operations and the public at large. The successful candidate will be able to operate in a fast paced, demanding environment and be able to deliver comprehensive structures inspections on time and in line with federal, corporate and regional requirements. Excellent organizational skills, resource management and attention to detail are essential in this position.


 


RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Schedule and coordinate inspections for assigned territory.

  • Coordinate with regional personnel regarding inspection schedules and plans.

  • Conduct detailed and accurate inspections of assigned structures noting conditions, making repair recommendations and assigning repair priorities for all components of the structures.

  • Climb all aspects of the bridges to determine and report the conditions.

  • Prioritize findings and defects in line with federal and G&W requirements.

  • Ensure prompt and appropriate immediate action is taken for each high priority finding to ensure the safety of G&W trains, employees and the public.

  • Ensure inspection data is promptly recorded into G&W’s Electronic Structures Information and Management System.

  • Assist in emergency situations requiring the inspections of any G&W structures.

  • Schedule, plan, and conduct system Snooper Truck Inspections utilizing under bridge inspection equipment.

  • Schedule, plan, and conduct system Underwater Inspections by means of, including but not limited to, sonar equipment, motor boats, or wading.

  • Accompany other team inspectors on detailed or large scale inspections as needed.

  • Develop system culvert inventory list.

  • Become a licensed FAA Part 107 UAV Pilot to conduct UAV operations on G&W structures and infrastructure.

  • Assist corporate and regional bridge staff in short-term and long-term bridge capital and repair programs.

  • Develop and grow regional relationships vital to the success and safety of the structures program.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Structures Inspection.


 


REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:



  • 5-10 years of experience in structures inspection, structures management, and/or engineering.

  • A working knowledge of the railroad industry.

  • Thorough working knowledge of FRA regulations, AREMA recommended practices and the AREMA Bridge Inspection Handbook

  • Through knowledge of FAA requirements for safe UAV operation

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Basic understanding of database management.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Sound judgment and decision making skills.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment.

  • Ability to accurately express structure conditions in written and oral communication.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced field environment and handle deadlines.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with regions and senior management teams, employees, customers, railroads, regulatory agency officials, and the general public.

  • Ability to operate machinery relative to bridge inspections.


 


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:



  • Required: High School Diploma/GED.

  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school of engineering.

  • Preferred: Professional Engineer or the ability to obtain.


 


FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY:



  • Ability to climb structures.

  • Ability to work at excess heights.

  • Ability to operate equipment and machinery

  • Ability to operate UAV’s

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to report to work with minimal advance notice.

  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, hard hat, safety vest, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection.

  • Work flexible daily schedules, including weekends, dictated by travel distance and inspection schedules.

90% or more covering the G&W North America railroads.
