This position is a Clinical Competency Educator for the System. This position reports to the manager of Professional Development and Clinical Compentency.




  • Coordinates and provides instruction to new and tenured clinical staff related to orientation and ongoing competency assessments utilizing a variety of settings and methodologies, including classroom and unit education, Computerized Based Training (CBT), simulation, etc.

  • Partners with nurse educators and nursing leadership in determining skills assessed for competency based upon risk codes, volume, new equipment/process, etc.

  • Determines appropriate evaluation methods for each. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates ongoing education to meet organizational needs.

  • Serves as a professional clinical resource for internal and external customers. Incorporates critical thinking skills, evidence-based practice, and quality into all educational activities.

  • Assists in the advancement of the professional practice environment by communicating the NGMC nursing strategic direction and focusing on activities that support the nursing strategic direction.

  • Provides nursing involvement support for VOICE and the NDNQI quality teams including coaching team members in their professional participation.

  • Assists with overall clinical governance and other projects as assigned.




Job Specific and Unique Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



Ability to relay clinical knowledge and evidence-based practice/procedures to a variety of caregivers, incorporating critical thinking, age and population specific care, electronic documentation, and quality healthcare delivery in classroom, simulation lab, or clinical unit settings.


Knowledge and application of adult learning principles related to current patient assessment and direct care delivery. Ability to communicate in respectful, constructive, consistent, and professional manner while assessing learner performance for accuracy and proficiency.


Demonstrate proficiency with various office and clinical computer systems, i.e., Microsoft office, online learning system, electronic medication administration and documentation system, simulation programming, etc.


Demonstrates strong organizational and presentation skills.


Professional, effective communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.



Essential Tasks and Responsibilities



Assist with the development of nursing orientation programming based upon needs assessments, discussions with key nursing leaders, regulatory and/or evidence based practice guidelines, and state practice laws.


Assess participant performance of clinical competencies accurately, consistently, and honestly, providing remediation suggestions/plans as necessary.


Facilitate group or individual learning activities via interactive presentations, video vignettes, demonstrations, simulations, lectures, or supervised direct patient care, to include assessment and evaluations for each.


Coordinate the onboarding process of the new employee between nurse educator, preceptor, and nurse manager.


Work with Simulation Educators to develop and deliver scenarios for simulation instruction.


Maintain training records according to Clinical Education department process and standards.


Facilitate safe and effective delivery of patient care and correct utilization of equipment, medications, etc. according to NGMC policies and procedures.


Facilitate clinical experiences for new and tenured employees, in partnership with department leaders, that support educational objectives and competency requirements.


Assist with the development and presentation of educational activities via development of goals, objectives, lesson plans, resource materials, and assessments utilizing adult learning principles and accepted professional standards.


Assist with BLS, ACLS, PALS, PEARS or other clinical instruction as needed by department.


Relieve/assist other instructors and/or secretary as requested and as responsibilities allow.


Participate in departmental and organizational performance improvement or regulatory accreditation activities as needed.


Serve as a professional resource to new and existing employees as evidenced by formal and information feedback mechanisms.


Demonstrate effective project management, critical thinking skills, productivity, and clinical expertise while functioning both independently and as a member of a team.


Submits data/reports as directed to supervisor.


Successfully completes mentoring class. Assists with mentoring of Registered Nurses when other mentor resources have been assigned. May mentor more as desired.



Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Georgia. Required: AHA BLS Certification. Preferred: ACLS, PALS, PEARS, TNCC, or NRP certification(s).



Required: Professional organization membership within one month of hire into the role.



Required: A degree in Nursing (either BSN or MSN). Preferred: A Master's degree (Nursing or other if possessing a BSN) within 5 years.



Required: Five years of medical-surgical or critical care bedside patient care experience. Preferred: Formal clinical education experience and/or preceptorship experience.
