The Senior Database Administrator is a technical expert within the Database Administration (DBA) team which is responsible for the technical administration and maintenance of all databases supported by Information Technology Services (ITS). This position is responsible for providing a leadership role for database administration and represents the DBA area in teams and committees, as needed. Technical tasks required on all NAU supported database platforms (Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL) include but are not limited to:
Technical Support - 35%
Respond quickly to requests for work through an online work request system. Provide guidance and assistance to less experienced DBAs and other teams on new development and enhancement projects. Perform database analysis, design, and implementation in cooperation with development teams. Coordinate database object modifications and data migration to production.
Problem Resolution - 15%
Troubleshoot and collaborate with others to provide solutions to problems; work with vendors to report software related issues.
High Availability Planning - 10%
Plan and implement measures to maintain database availability and reduce downtime.
Database Capacity Planning - 5%
Ensure sufficient processing, memory, and storage capacity by anticipating and planning for future growth. Work with System Administration Team to ensure the appropriate hardware is purchased in a timely manner.
Backup and Recovery - 5%
Plan, test, and implement backup and recovery procedures. Perform database recoveries as needed. Clone and/or copy databases as requested.
Security - 5%
Create security measures to minimize the risk of exposure of confidential information. Investigate and correct database security problems.¿ ¿
Performance and Tuning - 5%
Monitor databases and systems response times and implement tuning measures to improve database performance. Assist other teams with tuning of SQL queries when requested.
Scripting and scheduling - 5%
Write and maintain scripts to automate various system checks, database refreshes, log maintenance and other tasks.
Database Software Maintenance - 5%
Install and maintain database software systems including upgrading to newer versions and applying patches when released.
Third Party Software - 5%
Evaluate and recommend vendor software and database tools.
Other - 5%
Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field.
3-5 years of relevant experience.
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
MySQL Database Administration.
Oracle RMAN experience.
Data Warehouse/ETL tools experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Experience in Oracle Database Administration and/or SQL Server Database Administration experience required.
Ability to support multiple Database Management System platforms.
Expert at backup and recovery.
Proficient in Unix/Linux and PowerShell scripting.
Competent with performance and SQL tuning.
SQL and PL/SQL experience required.
Works well as part of a team as well as working independently.
Meticulous attention to detail.
Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

Salary range begins at $95,809. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits.
