SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the school principal, the High School Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing students that have emotional and behavioral disabilities an instructional program based on each students individual education needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities(include the following).
Develop goals and objectives for multi-graded classes. Implement Individual Education Programs (IEP) for all students. Provide direct instruction and services to students. Monitor students’ progress as it relates to established IEP’s. Work as a member of a trans-disciplinary team for planning and implementing data based instructional programs. Develop weekly lesson plans for each subject taught Provide a thorough assessment and diagnostic process for an individualized instructional program Provide information and support to parents and families when appropriate.
Maintain accurate reports, records and files on individual students.
Monitors client behavior so as to promote safety.
Plans a program that meets the student’s individualized needs, interests and abilities.
Creates an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the students’ maturity and interest.
Prepares course objectives for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of ISBE for Physical Education and Health. Employs a wide variety of instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting educational objectives that are outlined in the school curriculum. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. Assigns lessons and corrects homework.
Keeps attendance records
Implements all policies and/or behavior tools (point and level system) of the program with classroom behavior, policies, and procedures. Implement PBIS system.
Able to work with at-risk students with a variety of behavioral and emotional difficulties. Able to handle and de-escalate out of control behavior.
Reports significant changes in the behavior, attitude, or physical condition of students to team members, supervisors and parents as necessary.
Participates in staff meetings reporting on students’ behavior and progress
Adheres to departmental policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance with current departmental practices.
Comply with GEO Group policies and work rules as described in the company Employee Handbook, Seven Key Principles of care, the Facility Policies and Procedure Manual, including directives of GEO Group managers and supervisors in a cooperative spirit to ensure conformance to company standards.
Broad background, extensive knowledge and practical application of principals, practices, methods and strategies applicable to students with serious emotional disturbances or severe handicaps.
Strong assessment skills appropriate for learning disabled individuals.
Demonstrates ability to organize, prioritize and deliver a variety of instructional strategies.
Expresses ideas and concepts clearly and concisely in both oral and written form.
Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, teachers, staff and parents.
Have the ability to work with acting out and disruptive students in a highly structured behavioral program.
Knowledge of laws, codes and regulations as they relate to special education.

Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university; Masters Degree with an emphasis in special education AND three (3) years successful teaching experience working with a wide range of age groups and handicapping conditions preferred.
Certification Required
Illinois Certification LBS I
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence.
Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to apply basic math skills concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
Word processing, basic computer programs and email
Other Qualifications
At least twenty-one (21) years of age.
Criminal clearances (State Police, Local, FBI, DCFS and National Sex Offender Registry clearances).
Non-communicable diseases physical exam.
Valid driver's license.
Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.
