Job Description:

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is seeking an Educational Support Services Specialist to serve as Recruitment, Internship and Placement Coordinator and Director of Iowa High School Press Association. This position will oversee the School's effort to recruit new students and supervise internships for current students. This position helps current students with career placement, networks with alumni, and serves as the director of the Iowa High School Press Association. Supervision of the School's internship program which includes finding, publicizing, coordinating, and assessing internship experiences for journalism and mass communication majors. Career placement involves advising students about job searching strategies and building networks of alumni and employer partners to find job openings/positions for graduating students. In line with these efforts, this person will create and maintain journalism and mass communication careers web site. Finally, this person will lead the Iowa High School Press Association, a group that represents nearly 50 journalism programs in high schools across the state of Iowa.

Duties to include:

  • Provide a broad-range of programs and services focused on specific student populations that support the educational experience and retention of current or prospective students. Monitor the academic, career and personal goals/needs of a student and provide individual guidance and assistance. Discern students' needs and arrange for accommodations and services as appropriate. May manage a case load. Compile and prepare reports based on unit goals and make recommendations to the unit.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate projects and events with partners to meet program goals. Coordinate communication with partners. Collaborate with partners to maximize resources and connections.
  • Generate ideas, provide recommendations, and contribute to message development and implementation tactics.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with appropriate constituency group(s). Identify and coordinate appropriate public relations plans for specific events; suggest resources for University events (e.g., Speakers Bureau, State Fair, Class Reunion Weekend, Commencement and other ceremonies). May represent the University on behalf of the program, project or unit.
  • Create survey tools and collect, enter, and analyze data. Assist with maintaining stakeholder specific contact lists. Determine what component of stakeholder list is used for specific functions or contacts.

Education Required:

Bachelors degree in Journalism, Communication Studies or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Reasonable (1-3 Years) administrative, Supervisory, and/or program management experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer software applications
Desired Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree in related field
  • Experience working in the area of recruitment, internships and placement
  • Experience in public speaking, technical writing and/or teaching
  • Familiar with university policies and procedures
  • Experience working with students
