Position Purpose:

The Second College Grant Caretaker advances the educational mission of the Outdoor Programs Office (OPO) in the Second College Grant, a 27,000-acre property in northern New England. The Grant is a unique research, learning, and recreational environment for students, staff, faculty, and guests. The Caretaker leverages this property through educational program design and execution, maintenance of recreational and educational facilities, and interactions with researchers, guests and members of the public.


Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp:

High School or equivalency


Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

· High school diploma· Knowledge of facilities operations, maintenance, and management.· Possession of a valid U.S. or Canadian driver's license and continued qualification as an "approved driver" under the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.· Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.· Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan and manage maintenance on many facilities simultaneously.· Physical fitness and skills necessary to perform maintenance and lead programs.· Experience and ability to safely use and maintain hand and power tools.· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.· Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment.


Preferred Qualifications:

· General construction, repair, and trades experience, or the equivalent combination of experience and education.· Heavy equipment operation experience.· Educational programming experience, such as classroom teaching, environmental education, or outdoor education· Current Wilderness First Responder certification (or above) or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Description:


Facilities Planning/Management/Operations (40%)


  • Plans, develops, and schedules both short- and long-term use and maintenance and repair plans recreational facilities in the Grant, including negotiating contracts with vendors.

  • Inspects facilities and identifies, reports, and coordinates all maintenance requirements and resolves potential safety problems.

  • Conducts day-to-day maintenance operations, including restocking cabins, mowing, ensuring appropriate signage.

  • Supports access control to the Grant: issues day permits as per policies, monitors use during busy periods, notes and reports unauthorized Grant entry to supervisor.

  • In collaboration with the Facilities Coordinator, develops, implements, and maintains a master plan for new projects and schedules needed maintenance and repair work, deciding schedule modifications and changes.

  • Assesses and evaluates student interests and needs to establish goals and objectives for facility operations.

  • Coordinates student/staff /volunteer work trips for facility maintenance.

  • Provides consultation to students and student groups on opportunities for volunteer work and develops and implements training.

  • Establishes and maintains positive, collaborative working relationships with other Dartmouth College staff, such as staff in the Woodlands Office, Facilities Operations & Maintenance, etc.

  • In collaboration with the Director, liaises with the Grant Management Committee and the Grant Advisory Committee.

  • Trains and collaborates with other members of the OPO staff on Grant operations and procedures.

Description:


Cabins Support (30%)


  • Assists the Reservations Coordinator with cabin scheduling, guest communication, and key distribution.

  • Inspects cabins prior to arrival of new guests; ensures appropriate stocking of cabins with consumable goods (firewood, propane, toilet paper, etc.) as needed.

  • Serves in an "on-call" capacity to assist Grant users with resolution of needs.

Description:


Educational Programming and Support (30%)


  • In collaboration with other OPO staff, designs and implements programming utilizing the natural, recreational, and research facilities in the Grant for as educational tools.

  • In conjunction with the Woodlands Office, provides logistical support to researchers and faculty utilizing the Grant.

  • In conjunction with the Director of Outdoor Programs and the Director of Woodlands, designs and implements Grant-based educational programs for local communities.
