Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Operations Manager to join our Pharmachem Laboratories, LLC a Division of Ashland business at our Paterson, NJ location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Manufacturing function. This position will report to Plant Manager.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Maintaining a safe work environment for all site employees and visitors while complying with all local, state and federal safety and environmental regulations and company guidelines

  • Developing and implementing a strategic plan for the site that balances immediate needs with the long-term goals of the company

  • Providing high quality services, processes, and products to internal and external customers while consistently seeking ways to improve quality and efficiency

  • Interface across multiple sites to implement best practices, efficiency improvements, and growth initiatives.

  • Modeling positive leadership through open and effective communication, motivation, example setting and best practices

  • Supporting a positive team environment in which members participate, respect and cooperate with each other to achieve desired results

  • Actively contribute to the organizational goals by taking initiative, executing on goals and focusing on performance and safety

  • Improve the organization capacity and capabilities through building collaborative relationships, optimizing diverse talent and utilizing positive communications and influence with others

  • Able to work around shellfish and soy

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline

  • A minimum of seven years of experience in a manufacturing environment in roles of increasing responsibility and across multiple disciplines (ie., production, safety, engineering, etc.), preferably in a chemical processing or FDA facility.

  • A minimum of two to five years supervisory experience leading, influencing, building and developing a diverse and cross-functional team across various levels and skill sets

  • Experience working within and complying with all governmental regulations (OSHA, EPA,  FDA, SOX, etc.) and reporting requirements globally as required

  • Project & capital management, lean manufacturing practices, good manufacturing practices (GMP) experience preferred

  • Demonstrated responsible and ethical behavior at all times

  • The ability to help the company drive greater value through understanding the business, making complex decisions and creating the new and different

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:



  • Chemical Process Expertise - Possess strong chemical and process (technical) knowledge and skills focused on production operations at a plant


  • Manufacturing Process Knowledge - Knows how to analyze manufacturing and business processes toward optimization using continuous process improvement tools (Six Sigma and Lean)


  • Business knowledge and acumen - Understand the drivers that impact performance and growth of a business


  • Regulatory Compliance Knowledge– Understanding of and ability to work within various agencies involving local, state and federal safety, environmental, quality and financial regulations, standards and laws as required


  • Computer Skills - Working knowledge of current software systems, i.e. SAP, e-mail, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
