Job Description:

This position assists in staffing the laboratory office, performing clerical duties associated with laboratory operations. This position is also responsible for collection of specimens by phlebotomy or other methods and assists the laboratory staff.MISSION, VALUES and SERVICE GOALS

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receives requests from laboratory testing from floors, physicians, nursing homes and others and maintains a record of these orders.

  • Schedule and performs home draws as needed.

  • Instructs patients in the proper collections of preservation of urine samples and other patient participation tests, following present instructions.

  • Enters orders for lab tests in LIS, generates bar code labels and specimens and properly labels specimens.

  • Enters orders for referred tests in the reference laboratory system and aliquots, labels and stores the specimens according to the reference lab specifications.

  • Files a copy for medical records and sends a copy to the ordering physician or originating facility of results received from the reference laboratory in a timely manner.

  • Mails copies of completed laboratory reports to the ordering physician as needed.

  • Assures completeness of all test requisitions for the patient name, DOB, hospital medical record number, date, physician, time and test(s) ordered. In addition, any other relevant orders from the physician or required information for the laboratory must be obtained.

  • Checks patient orders for medical necessity and has patient sign an ABN, when indicated.

  • Obtains, processes, and accesses blood samples for laboratory testing by capillary, venous or arterial puncture. Assures the appropriate timing of collections is maintained.

  • Collects NPG and/or throat swabs as needed.

  • Orders stock supplies from materials management.

  • Observes volume of phlebotomy and bench supplies and restock as needed.

  • Loads specimens on automated analyzers.

  • Follow exact procedures, including those for sample handling, methods and record keeping.

  • Observes safety regulations.

  • Maintains professionalism and courtesy in encounters with patients, visitors, hospital staff and clients, both in actions and appearance.

  • Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Reports any unusual requests to the Supervisor.

  • Performs assigned tasks under minimal supervision.

  • Insures that work is complete and checks with Supervisor on duty before leaving for the day.

  • Answers the telephone and assist callers.

  • Establishes own work priorities as instructed.

  • Follows hospital personnel policies and procedures.

  • Participates in continuing education programs

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.

  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.

  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.

  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.

  • Complies with established organization and department policies.

  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of high school diploma (with courses in mathematics and some biological sciences preferred). Minimum of one year of patient care, customer service, general office/clerical or related experience is required. Completion of a phlebotomy training program or experience preferred.

  • This position as complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct. Must also comply with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy.

  • Attendance at one in-service each year to review hospital policies and procedures is mandatory or view staff orientation presentation on the intranet and turn in quiz to Human Resources.

Working Conditions

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, chemicals and other conditions common to a hospital laboratory.

  • May involve travel to various off site locations for pick up or delivery of specimens or supplies.

Physical Demands
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients up to 25 pounds.
